Overview

The Kusanagi class frigates are part of Bryn Shander's Year 00 Rearmament Plan, designed to replace the old and far less capable Serpent class frigates and Akuma class beam frigates. An inital batch of 150 ships has been completed and another 150 are under construction at Axis.

The Kusanagi is much more capable than it's predecessor, being built around a powerful 50 gigawatt spinal megaparticle gun and carrying six twin 500 megawatt megaparticle turrets. The Kusanagi's anti-aircraft suite is made up of eight twin 120mm autocannon mounts placed in pairs along the superstructure. Rounding out the Kusanagi's weapons are six 1200mm torpedo tubes that fire torpedoes armed with shaped 300 megaton warheads.

Unlike the Serpent, the Kusanagi carries a small compliment of auxillery craft consisting of two mobile suits, four fighters, and one shuttle. These craft, while certianly as capable of combat as the same craft stationed on capital ships and military bases, will primarily serve a utilitarian role on the Kusanagi. For example, the mobile suits can assist in heavy work outside of the ship, and the fighters can be used as scouts during patrol missions.

Losses

Early in year 01 of Bryn Shander's new calander, six Kusanagi class frigates, Tyrfing (FF-1606), Hofud (FF-1607), Durindana (FF-1608), Hauteclere (FF-1609), Joyeuse (FF-1610), and Aor Chryseion (FF-1611), were heavilly damaged by the massive explosion of two linked Hermes Gates during a mission to send the Galileo class science vessel Galileo (SV-067) to the Sculptor dwarf galaxy. Though onboard casualties were heavy, the ships were saved and were towed back to Axis for repairs. Unfortunately, two dozen of the the older and more vulnerable Serpent class frigates were destroyed in the blast along with several hundred civilian ships that had gathered to watch the launching of the mission to Sculptor.
