Laurasian Semantics

Laurasian Semantics (also known as Lausem and Partyspeak) is the language created by The Party in Laurasia to attempt to control the speech of each and every individual and thus their thought and consciousness. Lausem is meant to work in cooperation with the psychoactive pharmaceutical Dystorium in order to control the Laurasian population. However, it's main goal is to synthesize language from multi-word semantics, to dual-word semantics, and finally into a single word: yes. "Yes" is meant to be used as a sole response to anything The Party asks its denizens to accomplish, and to enforce unwavering loyalty.

According to the doctrine of Lausem, all language pre-dating its creation is deemed Otsem (also known as Other Semantics). The speaking of Otsem is not encouraged by the Laurasian government, but it occurs nevertheless due partially due to the massive size of the country and the inability to spread the language so far - yet.

The genesis of Lausem extends far before the Soviet Reformation. The earliest known words of Lausem was: Nazi, COMECON, and Gestapo. However, there is no public proof connecting the words.

Basic principles of Lausem

Removal of meaning

The basic principle behind Lausem is to remove all meanings of language and to replace it with simple dichotomies (good and bad, good thinking and crimethink (see below), etc.) until a single word was left: yes. A staccato rhythm of short syllables was also a goal, further reducing the need for deep thinking about language. Successful Lausem would mean the slow destruction of all semantic and logical thought, leaving a shell to be filled with Party loyalty and love for Father.

With this destruction of language comes the removal of synonyms. Good and bad would be replaced with good and ungood; black and white with black and unblack. Also, superlative forms of good (and other words) such as better and best would be replaced with morgood (more good) and mumorgood (much more good). However, other words were completely removed from the language itself. Words such as "love", "friends", "family", etc. have been either entirely removed or are in the process of being removed.

Word simplification

While synonyms, comparisons, and words entirely are destroyed, others have been shortened to a degree where only their base concepts are meant. For example "totalitarian" (and "total" for that matter) is replaced by "totl". This was meant to limit the ability of an individual to express certain emotions and beliefs thus extending to thought. A thought deemed unorthodox or against Laurasia is labeled crimethink and punishable by death, interrogation, and summary destruction.

While this word simplification is extensive, only certain words that are simplified are used within the Laurasian population. "Totl", "hae" ("hate" respectively), etc. are only used either on sparse occasions, or during inter-Cooperative communication.

Thought control

The main goal of Lausem was to control the thinking of the population to agree with OLICOL and The Party. The underlying theory of Newspeak is that if something can't be said, then it can't be thought. One question raised by this is whether we are defined by our language, or whether we actively define it. For instance, can we communicate the need for freedom, or organize an uprising, if we do not have the words for either? According to this, if an individual cannot describe a feeling opposite of how he feels now, he cannot gain the will to change the system.

• Crimethink: A thought disagreeing with Party doctrine.
• Goodsex: Sexual intercourse for the means of procreation, not pleasure.
• Crimend: To rid yourself of unorthodox thoughts.
• Goodthink: Orthodox thoughts.
• Plebfeed: Useless literature, movies, and music which were produced by the to keep the plebeians content
• Sumdest (summary destruction): The complete and total removal of all aspects of a person from the past, present, or future.
