The Leaguealese is the informal, but most commonly used, name for the top level of Legalese Domestic Soccer. Formed in Legalese Year 12 for play starting in the spring of year 13, the League is the first to fall outside the direct control of the Leaglese Association Football Federation. It is officially known as the Leaglese League of Professional Soccer Clubs, and as a business entity, is owned by Soccer Leaglese, Inc., which is wholly owned by the franchises making up The Leaguealese.

Format

The Leaguealese is a 12-team league, which plays 22 matches per team in the regular season. Each team plays the others twice. Matches are generally held on the weekends, though the occasional midweek game is played.

The Leaguealese Cup

At the end of the regular season, the top six teams in the standings participate in a post-season competition known as the Leaguealese Cup. The 3rd-best and 4th-best teams host the 6th and 5th-place teams, respectively, in a one-off match to determine who will advance to the semifinal round. The semifinals will be a two-leg format, with each side hosting one match. The top 2 seeds will play the first round winners, with the winner of each series advancing to the final. The cup will be awarded to the winner of the final, which shall be a one-off match held at a neutral location.

Other Features

To ensure a stable business format, The Leaguealese have established a series of rules and procedures that distinguish it from the models established by the LAFF in their governance of the L and M-Leagues.

Salary Cap/Floor

Each club has a minimum and maximum amount they can spend on their player payroll. This amount is meant to cover 25 players, of which 18 can be activated for a match. Teams can opt to carry less then 25 if they wish, but they still must meet the spending requirements.

Revenue Sharing

A great chunk of the revenues generated by the franchises are shared by the league as a whole. These include:

  • A percentage of ticket sales
  • All merchandise and memrobilia sales
  • Television Revenue
  • Half of the gate revenues from the 1st round and semifinal rounds of the Leaguealese Cup, as well as 75% of the gate reciepts for the final.

The money is then redistributed to the teams based on market size, revenue generation, and other factors. The end result is a league where with sufficient revenues, few should risk not profiting.

Roster Rules

While the practice of allowing only 18 players be available is not unique, the total roster size is, likely due to the inclusion of the salary cap rules. In addition, the Leaguealese has taken a more liberal stance on allowing foriegn players, simply stating that there must be more Legalites on the overall payroll than there are foreign players. In contrast, the LAFF limits the L and M-Leagues to no more than 3 foriegners on the 18-man roster, and 5 under contract to the club. Quality of play issues are the likely reasoning for the more liberal rules of The Leaguealese.

The Players Union

Perhaps seeing the inevitability of its future formation, as well as hoping to quell the possibility of labor unrest in the early stages, the franchises encouraged their players to form a union, the Legalese Professional Footballers Organization, to handle collective bargaining issues. While the first agreement was effectively the unilaterally-set terms of the ownership, it was agreed to by the players, leading to a 5-year Collective Bargaining Agreement being signed.
