The Liberal Party of Patricania is the current ruling political party of the Democratic Republic of Patricania. It was founded in 1850 by George Patrick Smith, an immigrant from the United Kingdom. It represents the values of classical liberalism and libertarianism in Patricania. The President of the Republic, Michael Howard, is a member of the Liberal Party.

History

In 1845, George Patrick Smith immigrated from the United Kingdom to Patricania while the country was still a monarchy. Seeing the need for a liberal movement in the kingdom, he borrowed from the model of the British Liberal Party and established the Liberal Party of Patricania in 1848. The party quickly gained popular among the people and accumulated power in the Parliament on a platform of social reform, personal liberty, reducing the power of the Crown, and free trade. By the end of the 19th century, the Liberal Party had considerable influence in both houses of Parliament. However, after the First World War, the Communist Labor Party became more and more popular, especially during the economic crisis of the Great Depression.

As tension grew between the United States and Soviet Union, Patricania was caught in the middle and a fascist movement grew amongst the upper classes. The Patricanian Nationalist Party staged a putsch and ruled the nation with an iron fist until 2005 when the armed forces supported a liberal republican revolution. Nearly all the leading figures of the revolution were members of the remnants of the Liberal Party that existed underground for the duration of fascist control. At the current time, the Liberal Party holds the presidency and a majority of the seats in Patricanian Congress. The leaders of the party are Carl Arostegi and Michael Howard.
