The Incorporated Islands of Lindim, or Lindim, is a fictional NationStates country founded in April 2004, though in-game its modern history begins at 1955. With a population of 1.497 billion and a strong economy, Lindim has gained respect through Nation|States for her two RPs and one essay that was featured by Max Barry on the News Page, Why I Play Nation|States.

History

The Estanni Civilization, 34 BCE - 1645 CE

The Estanni civilization first arose in the third century BCE, formed out of the aliiances of many different tribes living in an archipelago in the South Pacific. Over the years, the Estannis grew to become a major seafaring nation, and by 165 CE were the largest nation in the South Pacific. They began opening up trading routes further and further away, even reaching to the Africas and Northern Asia. When the fourth century came around, the Estanni were the most advanced civilization for hundreds of miles around.

This trend of great scientific and cultural achievements continued mostly in peace, as few nations would declare war on a trading power. The Estanni even survived the first wave of colonization to the South Pacific in the 1400's and 1500's, amazing the colonists with their incredibly technical ships, knowledge of medicine and astronomy, and unique architecture.

The Fall of the Estanni

However, in the 1630's colonists from the previously unknown country of Derrogi came to Estanni shores and began to establish a friendly relationship with the Estanni merchants. But when the Derrogi discovered the Lindimese religion of worshipping the Sea and Her Rivers, they immediately left overnight, without giving a hint of their plans. Many were confused, but not worried about this development and continued about their lives.

Then, months later, an armada of Derrogi ships approached the Estanni capital and began to lay siege to it without warning. War was declared, and a single, unending naval began that did not end for twenty years. The Estanni economic system, blockaded and cut off from trade by the war, collapsed and the civilization entered a period of utter darkness, with neighbor falling against neighbor and millions going without food. Weakened by the economic and internal strife, the Estanni were eventually overwhelmed by the Derrogi, who overran the islands and killed or enslaved nearly all of the Estanni, except for a few thousand tribal survivors on an isolated island called Lindim.

The Derrogi eventually created a colony on the ashes of the Estanni civilization, and continued to use the islands as a military base and a resource for wood and rare spices for hundreds of years, oblivious to the continued existence of the Lindimese, who had since learned to hide to survive.

The Lindimese War, 1945 - 1953

Three hundred years later, in 1945, Derrogi declared another religious war against the Hu, a West Pacific nation. The Hu, surprised but previously wary of the Derrogi, reacted swiftly and totally, wiping out the majority of the Derrogi fleet in a single, epic battle across the archipelago, and destroying the Derrogi airforce. Then, as a final blow, the Hu people dropped three atomic bombs on the archipelago. The bombs destroyed the mainland of the Derrogi colony, and the Derrogi Army along with them. The Derrogi quickly surrendered and pulled out from the islands, leaving the last, enslaved Estanni to suffer from the effects of the atomic bombs. Within months, the entire Estanni race except for the Lindimese were dead.

The Hu spent the next years attacking and decimating the Derrogi homeland and paid the former Estanni islands little attention. When the last of Derrogi were defeated, the Hu went back to the islands and finally realized what they had done.

The Unknown Years, 1953 - 1955

What happened in the next year is one of the most closely guarded secrets of Lindimese history. Little is known to the outside world, except that the Hu people settled in the islands, named the archipelago the Incorporated State of Lindim, and became the Lindimese people, abandoing their Hu homeland. The last of the original Lindimese seem to have disappeared, though rumors abound that the Linits are the females of the aboriginal Lindimese; what happened to the males is an even more closely guarded secret.

The Rise of Capitalizm, 1955 - 2004

From the moment of its creation, Lindim has been a strong proponent of small government and free trade, establishing laws to protect capitalizm and allow each citizen their economic rights. Under Statco Owonish, the second Prime Minister of Lindim, all tariffs were abolished to further the ideals and values of free trade. In 1962, Prime Minister Uwal Cani granted corporations full citizenship status and renamed the Islands of Lindim the Incorporated Islands of Lindim. By the year 1996, when Prime Minster Intry Fuego was elected to her first term in office, corporations held positions on the Estanni Court and Supreme Court, ran for political office, and were restricted with absolutely no laws at all. This lead to the greatest economic growth in Lindim's history and made it the strongest nation in the region.

The Tre Insurrection

Under Prime Minister Intry Fuego, Lindim experienced both unprecedented economic growth and a rise into the international spotlight. Fuego mobilized the military twice in preparation to help other countries threatened by imperialists, and it was during her first term the Huyuni Crisis, where the rogue Communizt country of Huyuni attempted a blockade of Lindim, was defeated by the up-and-coming naval prodigy, Runad Sero.

Fuego also presided over the series of tense relations with the UN, pulling out once before rejoining, and then pulling out a second time due to the UN's socialist leanings and impingments on national sovereignity. But overall, her first term was marked by civil, political, and economic liberties and a peaceful, golden age. She easily won re-election against her Conservative Socialist challenger, Senator Thy Garcs.

However, Lindim's history of peace and quiet ended on December 15th, the morning of Fuego's inauguration. Tre, the enigmatic and Socialist Intelligence Minister, launched a coordinated suprise attack on the inauguration with Socialist elements of the Lindimese Marines. With the Loyalist elements of the Lindimese Fleet diverted away to Avios by Tre's puppet, Defence Minister Poliy, Tre's Socialist forces locked away the formerly prosperous country of Lindim into a scene of fierce internal strife. While Fuego and her protective detail of Linits were overwhelmed and the Prime Minister taken hostage, Commerce Minister Kert Tirrew escaped the fighting with Marine General Nuhmi and founded a new base of operations for the Loyalist forces in Tenb, as the capital Iova was overtaken. From Tenb, calls to allies were sent out as Tre's forces, slowly but surely, began winning the war.

Meanwhile, Aviosian missiles ravaged civilian shopping centers and Lindimese military bases as the allies of Pacific Northwesteria, a member of the OMP, Mattvia, and Azazia responded to calls for help. Their fleets were dispatched to Lindim, and a Socialist battleship engaged in the first major naval battle with an Azazian battlecruiser and its two cruiser escorts. Both the Lindimese battleship, last of its kind, and the Azazian battlecruiser sank off the coast of the Booni Islands, a province of Lindim. The Azazian battlecruiser was utilizing a nuclear reactor for power, and the damage it caused is as of yet unaccounted for.
