Structure

Rules

The FALE, over fourteen seasons of play, have adopted five (six according to some sources, as one is disputed) systems. The current one requires the twenty-eight teams to abide by the following:

  • Premier Division will have 4 groups of 4 (16 teams, down from current 28), playing home-and-away twice amongst their groups [12 games] where the four group winners will play in a group to decide the final standings [home-and-away once, 6 games]. The eight bottom clubs will also play in a group, with the bottom three being relegated [home-and-away once, 14 games].
  • First Division will have 6 teams playing each other home-and-away twice (20 games). The first half champions and second half champions (or overall top two if the same team won twice) get promoted; alongside the next highest-placed team overall. The bottom team gets relegated.
  • Second Division will have 6 teams playing each other home-and-away once (10 games). The champion gets promoted.
  • 5 point penalty if finances do not meet minimum standards:
    • -L£1.5m minimum for Premier Div,
    • -L£1m minimum for 1st Div,
    • -L£1m minimum for 2nd Div
  • 2 point penalty if team is unable to play a scheduled home fixture due to crowd trouble, with the opposing team given a 3-0 win.
  • 1 match suspension for every ten domestic yellow cards
  • 1 match suspension for every domestic red card
  • 1 match suspension for every following three domestic yellow cards

Current League Pyramid

Of the 16 Premiership teams, the four group winners will go on to challenge for the trophy. The bottom two teams from each group will move into the relegation playoff, where three teams from the eight are relegated. The other teams remain in the Premiership.
In the First Division, the two half-season champions (or the overall champions and runners-up if the overall champions won both) are automatically promoted. The next best-placed team overall be the third promoted side. The bottom team will be relegated to the Second Division.
There are six teams in the Second Division, and there is no lower level. Therefore, no team is relegated from the Second Division. However, there is one promotion slot, which goes to the winner of the league seaon.

The 22F/23Q season for the first time saw a match be abandoned before it could begin; the City Centre of Liverpool derby between CCL 'C' and CCL 'D' was called off due to crowd trouble at their shared stadium. As the FALE could not decide which set of fans started the trouble, it expunged both teams from the tournament, and banned them both a further season. Icarus Wings, which had lost out in the same round on penalties to another team, were reinstated to the competition to replace the would-have-been winner of the abandoned tie.
