The FALE, over fourteen seasons of play, have adopted five (six according to some sources, as one is disputed) systems. The current one requires the twenty-eight teams to abide by the following:
+
*Premier Division will have 4 groups of 4 (16 teams, down from current 28), playing home-and-away twice amongst their groups [12 games] where the four group winners will play in a group to decide the final standings [home-and-away once, 6 games]. The eight bottom clubs will also play in a group, with the bottom three being relegated [home-and-away once, 6 games].
+
*First Division will have 6 teams playing each other home-and-away twice (20 games). The top two get promoted; the third and fourth teams playoff for the third promotion spot. The bottom team gets relegated.
+
*Second Division will have 6 teams playing each other home-and-away once (10 games). The champion gets promoted.
+
*5 point penalty if finances do not meet minimum standards:
+
**-L£1.5m minimum for Premier Div,
+
**-L£1m minimum for 1st Div,
+
**-L£1m minimum for 2nd Div
+
*2 point penalty if team is unable to play a scheduled home fixture due to crowd trouble, with the opposing team given a 3-0 win.
+

Of the 16 Premiership teams, the four group winners will go on to challenge for the trophy. The bottom two teams from each group will move into the relegation playoff, where three teams from the eight are relegated. The other teams remain in the Premiership.<br>
+
In the First Division, the champions and the runners-up are automatically promoted. The third and fourth placed teams will playoff over two legs to decide the third promoted side. The bottom team will be relegated to the Second Division.<br>

There are six teams in the Second Division, and there is no lower level. Therefore, no team is relegated from the Second Division. However, there is one promotion slot, which goes to the winner of the league season.
