History

Lwellslians’ oral history, preciously handed down from generation to generation, indicates their island was settled by their ancestors about 1900 years ago, and that they found it uninhabited. The first humans to reach this small island lost in the middle of the ocean were undoubtedly Wymgani explorers who had set out from the Ariddian Isles.

They found the island held sufficient resources for them to settle there, and there they stayed undisturbed for almost two millennia, until Lwellsl was discovered recently by West Ariddia - no doubt one of many islands still undiscovered in the vastness of the Pacific Ocean. An expedition made contact with the Lwellslians, and found them to be remarkably similar, in ethnic terms, to Indigenous Ariddians.

The Lwellslians expressed an interest in learning more about the wider world, and accepted for a small number of West Ariddians to live among them. The Queen dispatched envoys to West Ariddia in turn. The Lwellslian authorities agreed for the island to be placed under West Ariddian protection, so as long as the latter did not interfere with the island unless specifically invited to do so.

Culture

Lwellslian society resembles traditional Indigenous Ariddian society, though there are differences. Similarities include the lack of any religious beliefs whatsoever, and a very strong closeness to nature, a sense of responsibility and symbiosis Lwellslians feel with their surroundings.

Society, however, is a little more structured than among Ariddian Wymganis, perhaps due to the limited space the Lwellslians dwell on, and the consequent closeness the same people live in on a permanent basis.

Lwellslians speak their own language, which has, like them, existed and evolved in isolation over hundreds of years. West Ariddian linguists were slowly able to translate it, thanks to some remaining root similarities with the Wymgani language, and the assistance of the Lwellslians themselves.

Government

16 year-old Queen Wayal is the leader of Lwellsl; the monarchy is hereditary. She has near-absolute powers should she choose to wield them, but in practice Lwellslian monarchs have never been tyrants. The Queen relies on a Chief Adviser, chosen by herself after consultation with the elders of the island’s society. Other advisers form a sort of informal council, and are chosen by the Queen based upon suggestions made by the people themselves during periodical gatherings. The elders also take part in the council.

Current Situation and Concerns

Lwellsl is officially a territory administered by West Ariddia. In practice, it remains a self-governing entity, and has obtained assurances from the West Ariddian government that it will remain that way. The West Ariddian navy and airforce ensure the protection of the island from any outside interference.

The People’s Democratic Social Republic of Ariddia has expressed some concern that West Ariddia may try to influence the future of Lwellsl’s society, despite West Ariddian assurances of the opposite.

A number of islanders have expressed an interest in travelling abroad, which has sparked concerns that the population of Lwellsl, already barely large enough to remain self-sustaining in the long run, may drop in years to come and force all Lwellslians to relocate within a larger community abroad.

Geographical Note

Please note that Lwellsl is not geographically a part of the Ariddian Isles nor of Uhuhland. Thus it is not counted among the twenty islands shared by the three Ariddian states.
