The Mars Defence Initiative, or MDI, was formed to replace the less effective MIDAS-II alliance, which, due to inactivity and several problems in the actual treaty text, had become ineffective at serving its intended purpose of protecting Mars from threats, and improving relations between member nations in the hope of creating a stable, and peaceful Mars.

History

Valinon and Pilon in particular were responsible for organizing the conference hosted in Mizar 3 where the treaty text for the alliance was drawn up. Other nations that sent representatives included Kajal, Eniqcir, Tiburon, Mangala, Sunset, Pilon, Zero-One, Tarasovka, Weyr, and Wazzu. Though originally called MIDAS-III, the treaty name was quickly changed to MDI. During the conference afterwards, a great deal of discussion ensued, a draft was finally approved and the MDI was formed.
