The armed forces of the Grand Duchy of Maanenland are the responsibility of the Maanenic Ministry of Defence on behalf of the Duke of Cliffton. The position of Commander-in-Chief is shared between the Lord Lieutenant and the Crown.

The Maanenic Armed Forces' responsibility is to protect the territorial integrity of Maanenland and the strategic interests of the duchy wherever they may be in the world. The armed forces remain fully neutral of any defence alliance.

Investment in the forces remains relatively high with most investment going into technological superiority over sheer force alone.

Maanenland officially has no nuclear weapons but has the technological capbilities and existing infrastructure to launch a nuclear attack. Most military strategists agree that the nation could build nuclear weapons almost as soon as the order is given. In January 2006 the Maanen Reporter newspaper reported that the submarine fleet was to be 'urgently equiped' so far the government has said it 'refuses to comment on strategic matters whether true or false'.
