Marie-Angelique, Duchess of Votosoros, or Mademoiselle la Duchesse de Votosoros, is the only surviving child of Duke Constantine of Votosoros, whom she succeeded as hereditary duchess of Votosoros, one of Pantocratoria's oldest duchies. As she is a minor, her estate is held in trust for her and administered by a board including the Emperor, the Corporation of the City of Demetriopolis, and the Greek Orthodox Bishop of Subeita. She lives in the Imperial Court of Christ Pantocrator, as a ward of the Emperor, although she is actually cared for by her very strict governess, Madame de la Valverte.

She was the sole surviving member of her family, who were among the rare casualties of a biological weapon attack launched against New Rome in 2003 by an elven terrorist group. The Duke, Duchess, Marquis (the Duke's only son and Marie-Angelique's brother) and Marie-Angelique herself were in the Old Quarter of the city when a lone night elf terrorist unleashed a deadly, airborne biological agent just two buildings away. With Aelosian and Excalbian assistance, an army medical research unit developed an antidote with which all those exposed could be treated, however its development came too late for some twenty three of the city's inhabitants, including one of the research scientists, two prisoners, the six police officers who formed the first response team to the attack, and some of the occupants of nearby buildings. Marie-Angelique received the antidote just hours away from death - the antidote arrived only minutes after her elder brother had died.

Marie-Angelique de Votosoros is a pretty girl with very light brown hair and green eyes, although she is often ridiculed by other girls at court for her appearance on account of her dresses being much plainer than befits a young lady of her station. Whether the simple dresses are a cost-saving measure by Marie-Angelique's trust board, or a method of instilling modesty in her ward innovated by Mme de la Valverte is a frequent matter for court-gossips. She is a good friend of Princess Zoë, the youngest of the Emperor's daughters, and attends many of the same classes, including Princess Irene's much-feared etiquette and decorum classes (at the insistance of her governess).
