Nationstates Description
The Republic of Marstelon is a very large, safe nation, remarkable for its compulsory military service. Its compassionate, cynical population of 158 million are ruled without fear or favor by a psychotic dictator, who outlaws just about everything and refers to the populace as "my little playthings." The enormous, socially-minded government juggles the competing demands of Defence, Law & Order, and Religion & Spirituality. The average income tax rate is 37%, but much higher for the wealthy. A healthy private sector is led by the Pizza Delivery industry, followed by Soda Sales and Automobile Manufacturing. Tourists from around the world come to visit the country's famous rainforests, the nation is ravaged by daily union strikes, the arms industry is strictly regulated, and hunters have been known to lose limbs while attempting to 'play tag' with their prey. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force. Marstelon's national animal is the eagle, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the dolar.
Note: This mainly refers to when Marstelon uses "Modern Tech", except for the compulsory military service and the 'all pervasive police force'. The remainder of this article will mainly refer to Marstelon using WWI tech, due to a RP I hope to participate in in the near future.
== History == (Circa WWI, Modern Marstelon is about 158 years old)
Marstelon is relatively young, being only about 153 years old, founded in 1765 as a protectorate of a far far away nation fond of colonies and its overseas empire, mostly so convicts could be convieniently and cleanly disposed of and so the natives (which have been nearly eliminated and all remnants of culture destroyed) could be 'left alone in peace to showcase an example of the noble savage'. After the population reached 20 million in 1780, the colonizing nation allowed it to become independent but many retired men that had served in the province had settled, from fusiliers and powder monkeys up to a general and a commodore, for the army and the navy respectively. They helped train the army and navy up to snuff and no foreign nations complained when the brutal conquest of the 'Aborigines' began. Dragoons played a role in several of the first battles, but the war, as it has been termed, really was more like a long period of fighting, with the occasional break in hostilities so both sides could lick their wounds and, in the case of the natives, retreat farther away. The war lasted until nearly 1865, which allowed a repeating rifle (Essentially the "Henry" repeating rifle of the RL American Civil War) to become a treasured arm of the Marstelon Army, and Ironclads to establish a hold in the Marstelon Navy.
However, as this was an internal war, Marstelon has never fought a war with a foreign power, buying arms to subjugate the internal enemy from any foreign power that was judged trustworthy and, though the government has never admitted, the cheapest weapons. Although it took a few skirmishes with foreign ironclads to get ironclad monitors their niche in the navy, ironclads were a major part of the navy until the past 25 years.
Government
Government is currently a dictatorship, ruled by the Prime Minister. Any rebels are subjugated by either the Army or the Police, which, in the event that lethal force is required, use M1911 11.4 mm pistols and Model 98 Mauser rifles. The Prime Minister is supreme ruler; his word is law. It's more like a fascist dictatorship than a Republic; it is said that the nation used to be a Republic but, as any scholar of Marstelon History knows, the quasi-fascist nature of the nation is due to its pursuit and subjugation of the natives. A rather active socialist party was officially eliminated a few years ago, and any books on socialism are burned, banned, and their authors disposed of, generally by Firing squad, although occasionally they are only imprisioned.
