The Democratic Republic of Matyanserremia is a peaceful, left-leaning nation known for its genuine, hard-working citizens and stunning geographical features. As a country it is relatively young, however ancient Matyans have occupied the continent for thousands of years.

History

It is not completely known how long ancient Matyan tribes have occupied the continent, however, estimates range from 2000 - 1500 B.C. Ancient Matyan tribes were nomadic in nature, with many tribes known to travel hundreds of kilometres each year following their food. Each tribe had their own culture and spoke their own language, however the mixing of different tribes was very common. Although tribes would often compete with each other for the same food sources, all Matyan tribes adhered to a common Code of Honour, and warring between tribes was virtually unknown.

Because of its island geography, outside contact was rare until the global exploration and trade by Europeans occurred in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Matyans were known to make beautiful rugs, and a trade route between the Matyan island and England was established due to the high demand for these items. Additionally, Matyan tribes would often trade spices and fur in return for European tools and literature. As a result, Matyan technology rapidly caught up with the rest of the developed world.

In the late 19th century, Matyan tribes began to mix with each other on a more permanent basis, and small villages were formed at key locations where food and water were in abundance, typically near the western coast and near rivers further inland. English became the language commonly spoken, partially due to the large amounts of trade with England, and also because a large amount of the literature they received was written in English.

The Matyans chose to formally establish themselves as a republic in the summer of 1908. Holoto Cevra was democratically elected as the Matyanserremia's first leader, and the country's basic rights including freedom of speech and freedom of religion were established.

Geography

Matyanserremia is an island continent, situated in the Nasicournia region. Its climate is mainly temperate, with arid regions in the southern central portion of the continent.

Three mountainous areas exist on the continent; a small range to the northwest near the coast, a longer range in the eastern central portion of the continent, and another mountainous area in the western central portion of the continent. The two mountainous areas in the western half of the continent are believed to have formed from intense tectonic and volcanic events in that area some three thousand years ago (known by ancient Matyan peoples as P'iro vol Termpet, or "the time of fire").

Natural Wonders

The Colranado Range
The Colranado Range is a short range of very tall mountains to the country's northwest, which is believed to have formed after a massive historic earthquake. It is located to the east of the coastal city of New Colranado, often leaving many parts of the city in shadow for a significant part of the day.

Lake Fairfield
Lake Fairfield is an area of approximately 700 square kilometres, situated some 100 kilometres to the east of Electrical City. It is a series of tall peaks, lakes and dense pine forest. Almost all of the mountains in the area were created by volcanic activity, and as a result much of the surrounding area has very rich soil, particularly to the east. The entire area is classed as a national park and is protected by the National Wonders Act 1985, meaning that the area is virtually untouched by large scale development.

Government

Matyanserremia operates as a Democratic Republic. There are four branches of Matyan government; the House of Representatives, the Senate, the Chief Justices and the Head of State.

House of Representatives

The House of Representatives ("the House") consists of 250 democratically elected individuals representing their electoral region. Each member serves a four year term, and half of the House is elected every two years.

Senate

The Senate consists of 100 democratically elected individuals representing their electoral region. Each member serves a six year term, and half of the Senate is elected every three years.

Chief Justices

This branch of Matyan government consists of twelve individuals. To serve as a chief justice, one must first be recommended by the Head of State, and then elected by at least two thirds majority in both the House and the Senate. Each justice serves a maximum ten year term. In the event that a justice dies while serving his term, his chair is then up for reelection and the period of ten years is reset. Therefore, there is no set election cycle for Chief Justices, each position is decided upon when it arises.

Head of State

The party which holds the majority of seats in the House of Representatives elects from its members an individual to serve as Head of State. This individual represents Matyanserremia in international affairs.

Power distribution

Each branch of Matyan government holds equal power. All legislation must be passed by at least three branches of the government before it is brought into law. If the legislation is not able to be passed after three consecutive attempts in a twelve month period, it is unable to be considered again in parliament for a period of twelve months from the date of the last failed attempt.

Transportation

Military

By international standards, the Matyan Defense Force (MDF) is quite small, with the majority of Matyans preferring to solve international incidents without the use of military force, or alternatively preferring to stay away from such disputes completely. The MDF consists of five branches; the Army, Air Force, Navy, Border Patrol and National Protection Corp. Due to its island geography, the country's Air Force and Navy are its largest branches in terms of both government spending and enlisted personnel, with the Army being much smaller and more frequently being engaged in internal disputes. The role of the MDF is principally for national defense, with the military never having been engaged in an international conflict.

In total, the MDF consists of approximately 750,000 personnel (or nearly 1% of the country's population), which includes 100,000 officers and non-combat support personnel and 150,000 active reservists.

Air Force

The Matyan Air Force (MAF) consists of almost 175,000 flying personnel flying a fleet of 25,000 aircraft and supported by 75,000 non-combat personnel, including aircraft mechanics, mission coordinators, air traffic controllers and various other roles. The Matyan fleet is mostly comprised of air-air equipped aircraft, with a small portion dedicated to anti-ship and air-ground roles. A small fleet of five aircraft is designated as "tactical / special operations" aircraft, whose principal peace-time role is associated with the gathering of intelligence.

The MAF also has a special air-display team, with the pilots typically being among the best in the air force. This team conducts displays at air shows nationally, with the intention of increasing the number of applications into the armed services.

Navy

The Matyan Navy, commonly assisted by the Matyan Border Patrol, patrols Matyanserremia's coastline to a distance of twenty five nautical miles offshore and is charged with the task of ensuring all vessels in Matyan waters pose no security risk to the country. It consists of thirty five large battleships and two aircraft carriers, which are manned by 100,000 sailors and 25,000 support personnel. The battleships are nuclear powered, and can attain speeds of 35 knots with optimum wind and sea conditions.

Army

The Matyan Army consists of 25,000 combat personnel supported by 75,000 non-combat personnel. The Army is principally engaged in internal disputes and also assists the National Protection Corp in times of national crisis. While the Army has never been deployed internationally, their training is on par with most other modern nations and they are always equipped to protect Matyan interests abroad, should the need arise in future.

Border Patrol

The Matyan Border Patrol is a broad-reaching group which includes the Matyan Coast Guard, Customs and Immigration Agency (CImA), as well as some aspects of crime prevention agencies. As well as assisting the Navy in its tasks, the MBP is also given the job of dealing with illegal immigrants, and through its subagencies (the Coast Guard and CIma), it ensures protects civilian interests at sea and is involved in screening entrants to Matyan borders at seaports and airports, respectively.

The majority of the MBP is non-combat support, often civilians, while a small amount are soldiers trained to typically a more advanced level than the Navy. The size of the MBP is estimated to be around 35,000.

National Protection Corp

This corp of around 150,000, of which many are reservists, are trained to the same level as the Army, but are tasked with non-combat roles, principally being natural disaster cleanup and assistance. In the event of a full national emergency and / or a breakdown of the Matyan government, the MPC is responsible for returning the peace and targeting whatever enemies of the nation are be present, regardless of whether the enemies are external or internal.
