Maya Toitovna is possibly one of the best known and most recognizable people in Mangala’s history. Maya came to Mars in the first wave of immigration from Earth, and quickly made a name for herself as an efficient and powerful administrator. Maya was one of the key leaders of the revolution in [date??] and was deeply involved in negotiating the peace settlement that led to Mangala’s independence. Following the negotiations, Toitovna was named as the nation’s first Voice of the Imperial Council. With the advent of “the treatment,” the cocktail of drugs and gene therapies that prolonged the human lifespan to unheard of lengths, Toitovna was able to hold onto her position as the Voice for over 100 years (~50 M-years). Possibly her greatest achievement was her driving role in the creation of the Duma, Mars’ global court. Following the Duma’s creation Toitovna stepped down as Voice of the Council, leaving the position to her protégé Frank Terrel.

Maya was not gone from the national stage, however. As one of Mangala’s most powerful public figures, she continued to influence the Mangalan government. When a rogue member of the Imperial Council attempted to seize power and move the country to war Toitovna was able to stop him through a combination of luck and quick thinking. Drawing on her contacts with MangalaCorp she was able to gather the capital to purchase a score of decommissioned Sunset warships and, with the ragtag fleet at her back, force the Council to see reason.

Declining a position on the Council, Maya instead chose to work with the Duma and Mangala’s extra-Martian territories. Today she lives quietly, out of the public spotlight. Her legendary beauty and great spirit are inextricably bound in Mangala’s past, and may yet guide its future.
