Meekinosian History

The tiny Greek nation of The Hellenic Capitalist Paradise of Meekinos has a quiet history. There is nothing entirely worth noting about the history of it. The nation was founded by ex-pat Greeks who were sent into exile after committing treason against their government. Once they found the land, they sent for their families and friends, asking them to come and form a new country. They were then shortly joined by businessmen who found themselves too heavily taxed and oppressed in other Greek nations.

Soon Meekinos became a haven for capitalists and anyone seeking a fortunate.

The laws of Meekinos, historically, were developed on the grounds that this nation was to be a purely capitalistic nation, that gave preference to small, medium and big business, with little emphasis on religion and social welfare.

The constitution of Meekinos was developed by the ex-pats and a group of wealthy businessmen who sought personal freedoms from the government so that they could run their businesses as they wanted, paying very little tax if any. Additionally because they wished to preserve the capitalistic nature of their nation and economy, they added a clause and several sub-clauses to the constitution so that the only types of goverments that could exist in Meekinos were pro-business governments. This meant that communist, fascist, socialist and any kind of government that focused on social welfare and anything anti-business wasn't welcome in the federal legislature of Meekinos.

However, personal freedoms are highly valued and they were deeply entrenched into the depths of the Meekinosian constitution.

Meekinosian Education System

Due to the capitalistic nature of Meekinos, it is not common to find someone to be of the unskilled variety. All of the children in Meekinos are given practical training in school, with very little emphasis on liberal arts, unless they decide to be a writer or an artist. Those fields are often discouraged unless the child shows exceptional skill there. It's common place in both primary and secondary schools to train children in basic areas of skilled work in addition to math, science, English (reading, writing, comprehension), Greek (reading, writing, comprehension), history, geography and physical education.

In primary school they are given basic introductory training in these areas:

  • Mechanics
  • Cooking
  • Computer Studies
  • Economics
  • First aid

Secondary Education

When they arrive in high school, they are given the chance to dabble in liberal arts such as visual, dramatic, musical and vocal arts. Literary art is the only form of liberal arts that is not discouraged in children, as writers provide one of many supporting columns for the economy.

Guidance counsellors at Meekinosian secondary schools are required to meet with students at least once a month and track progress. In this, they are to provide direction and point the students in the direction of a field of work and academics that will best suit their economical situtation, as well as the extent of their skills.

When a student's grade average slips below 65% they are put on an academic watch by their assigned guidance counsellor and are required to check in with a peer tutor at least once a week until they bring up their entire grade average by the next mid-term report. After that, the academic watch is lifted but it stays on their record.

Students who have a grade average under 60% are considered to be failing and are placed on academic probation, as well as issued an official warning from the ministry of education to shape up and bring up their grade average or face unfavourable consequences. They are given one mid-term period to bring up their grade average.

After that, if they haven't, they face expulsion and they are unconsidered unskilled labour and are required by law to check into the local Labour Force and Employment Office for tagging. This tag prevents them from getting a job, marrying, owning property, having a credit. It basically strips them of all but the basic rights to healthcare and shelter. If they have children, the children are taken away by the state because they are deemed unfit to parent. Once they reach adulthood and they have these tags, they are drafted into the unskilled labour camps for life. The only way to get out is to apply to an intensive 10 year reducation program.

Post-secondary Education

If a student's grade average remains above 65% then in their last year of high school, grade 13, they are required to pick their post-secondary academic path. There are basic entry level skilled work for high school graduates, but little room to move up the corperate ladder. The real jobs are for those who finish an apprenticeship, college or university.

The following lists are just a handful of the jobs that are available to the students who have finished a certain level of education, with the minimal requirement being a high school diploma and a grade average of 65% or better.

Most will include the entry level and the highest rank.

The high school graduate jobs are also available (the first four on the list) to students in high school who have a grade average over 70%, or their economic situation isn't good (their family is below poverty line)and their grade average is at least 65%.

Entry-level Industry

  • Fast food (cook-manager)
  • Retail (cashier-manager)
  • Produce (bagboy-manager)
  • Restaurant (busboy-manager)
  • Maintaince Staff

  • Computer programming, consultation & networking
  • Daycare & Early Childhood Education
  • Hospitality
  • Dental Hygeine Assistant

  • Civil/Public Servant

A Meekinosian with a college education in any field that is taught at the primary or secondary level is consider eligable to apply to teacher's college in order to teach in their designated field.

Apprentice-Level Industry

  • Construction
    • Foundation
    • Machinist
    • Bricklayer
  • Electrician
  • Mechanic
  • Plumber
  • Exterminator

Anyone in this area who has completed their apprenticeship program successfully can either go and work in their area or become a teacher depending on where the greater demand is. Usually they will go to work in their area, but some pick to teach their speciality as a subject.

A Meekinosian who achieves their Masters status in their field can apply to take on an apprentice once they have proven that they are vastly knowledgeable in their field.

University-Level Industry

  • CEOs, Senior Managers
  • Civil/Public Servant
  • Politicians
  • Market Analysts
  • Biochemists
  • Doctors, Nuses, Specialists
  • Journalists

A student who successfully completes a university level major, but doesn't do that well, is usually given the certification but required to take an equivolency program at the college-level in order to receive full-certification, unless the program doesn't exist. If that is the case, they are retested on all major areas and then granted a full diploma upon successful completion.

Beyond Education

There are Meekinosians who just don't have what it takes to develop the skills. They are given a reprieve at the high school level. They are required to get 60% in order to pass, but after that, they are directed to jobs that best suit their skills. If they can't finish high school without risking failure, but they have potential elsewhere, they are encouraged to enlist in Meekinos' small domestic army.

Males typically will enlist in the army if they can't successfully get the skills they need, while females are also allowed to enlist but are encouraged to be stay-at-home mothers and fulltime caregivers for the elderly and disabled.

This is the exception to the failure rule because they would likely have tried but lack the ability to. The academic failure rule applies to the students who don't try, who don't do their homework, skip school and drop-out.

Meekinosian Facts

Military

Meekinos has no standing military.

It does have a domestic military that is purely for national defense, but it has never gone to war and never plans to. Their military is structured in such a way that it is only trained in defense tactics and its weapons aren't elaborate, even though there is a National Ballistic Missile Shield in place.

The three branches of the Meekinosian military are:

  • Meekinosian National Guard
  • Meekinosian Naval Force
  • Meekinosian Air Force
