History

Overview

Mittsville as a nation was created only 40 years ago. Since then it has moved into the region of Aberdeen, where it is now.

Ancient History

The oldest Civilisation to exist in what is now Mittsville is known to experts as the Original Civilisation It is thought to be at least 2500 years old. Burial mounds and evidence of ancient towns have been discovered in north east Mittsville. They have been carbon dated and are thought to come from around 500 BCE.

Not much is known about this period in Mittsvillian History, as no archaeological sites from the era were discovered until less than 20 years ago. However, it is though that these people came from TEN island and were subsequently cut off by the East Mittsville Mountains. The Civilisation was a mainly peaceful one, as there were no other people to oppose it. Experts believe that this civilisation collapsed in about 0 BCE.

0-900 CE

After the collapse of the Original Civilisation, people separated into different tribal groups. The peace of the Original Civilisation was shattered as tribes were almost constantly at war with each other. This “great war” of Mittsville lasted for almost 900 years, until peace was achieved through alliances with each other and settlers from Blackrock Island to the north. Evidence of these settlers has been found under Highfolk Sea, where sunken boats have been preserved. It is believed that these settlers lost contact with their homeland.

900-1700 CE

For the next 800 years there was relative peace within the borders of modern Mittsville. Over time more than 20 small city-states and kingdoms emerged and trade flourished between them. International relations between the nations were good and they fought together to protect themselves against invaders from mainland TEN. It was at this time that many explorers sailed to Blackrock Island, and there they founded the nation of Eramia. Life was good for the people of Mittsville, but this was soon to change.

1700-1800 CE

In the year 1713, King David III came to the throne of Enerame. He quickly closed off its borders and started to put the whole country under his will. He developed new weapons and trained the biggest army that Mittsville had seen. In 1642 he declared war on all the nations to which Enerame bordered. They were unprepared for the new weapons that had been developed, and fell easily.

By 1750, Enerame controlled the southern half of Mittsville, and was contained by the central hills and the East Mittsville Mountains. Other nations in Mittsville allied together and used all their army to contain and blockade Enerame. However, while their army was defending free Mittsville, the nation of Eramia was attacked, and without a sufficient army to defend it, surrendered to the invaders.

In 1762, King David III died, and without a descendant for the crown to pass to, Enerame entered a civil war. The civil war lasted for only 4 years, when the allied armies of the other nations conquered all of Enerame.

1800-1900 CE

The victorious armies established a new monarchy in Enerame, but many people did not like the new king, and because he did not have an army to defend his rule, they rebelled against the king and established Mittsville’s first democracy in Enerame, where all male citizens could vote for their own leaders. This new idea spread throughout nearby kingdoms, where many similar revolutions took place.

In the north of Mittsville, one of the few remaining kingdoms, Aneras, decided to send its army to recapture the nation of Eramia. When it reached Eramia, it found very little resistance, and took over the nation. Unfortunately, Aneras was attacked shortly after and was “liberated” by the forces of a neighbouring nation. The ruling family of Aneras managed to escape to Eramia, and Eramia remained a monarchy after all the nations in mainland Mittsville became democracies.

1900-2000 CE

A new period of international cooperation started, and many nations enjoyed the boom in productivity and trade that democracy gave them. It was at this time that women were first allowed to vote in elections. In 1922, the first proposal of a unified Mittsville was made.

However, relations deteriorated, and soon Mittsville was on the brink of war. Invaders had appeared on the East Mittsville Mountains and the south coast of Mittsville, and one nation was supporting them. The nation of Mosotan controlled the south eastern border of Mittsville, and in 1948 it publicly agreed an alliance with a kingdom over the mountains. Another nation, Teralia, controlled the south east coast of Mittsville. It had declared war with the kingdom over the mountains previously, and as soon as Mosotan signed an alliance, Teralia declared war on Mosotan.

Mosotan and Teralia established a fighting front along their border. By 1951, it was clear that this front was not going to move, so Mosotan attacked the city-state of Attolia to the north west. This proved to be a bad move, as nations that had previously stayed out of the war, most notably Aneras, were drawn into the conflict. Within a year Mosotan had been defeated and Teralia doubled its land area and became one of the most powerful nations in Mittsville.

It was now clear to many that only a complete unification of Mittsville would stop future wars. In 1961, a conference was started in the nation of Dranon which would agree the unification.

Dranon was an economically powerful nation, which had done very well when it became a democracy. It had also stayed out of wars which made it a perfect candidate for the conference.

In 1964, the treaty of Dranon City was unveiled. It created the unified nation of “The free states of Mittsville,” with its capital as Dranon city, and divided it up into four states, which were based on the land areas of the four most powerful nations in Mittsville; Aneras, Dranon, Enerame and Teralia. These states were to each have an elected council and an elected governor. These governors would make up the High Council, which would be lead by an elected Prime minister.

Present day

Currently, this same system of government still exists in Mittsville. In 1995, the last King of Eramia died, and the people voted for Eramia to become an autonomous colony of Mittsville, which it has remained. In May 2005, Matt was elected Prime minister of Mittsville. Quickly, he opened up relations within the region, which was called Aberdeen. Since then, Mittsville has become one of the most important nations in Aberdeen, and Matt had been in the Regional government for 2 terms until he died in his sleep on 15 October, 2006. He was succeded by Paul Johnson.

Government

Mittsville is divided into 4 states, which are further divided into 25 constituencies. There are two arms of the government, the State Council and the Parliament . The two arms are similar, and simply work on a different level.

Government Organisations

State Council

Each of the constituencies has 2 representatives in the State Council. They serve for a 4 year term. There are 50 MPs in each State Council. Each state also votes for a State governor at the same time. The Governor leads the State Council.

Parliament

Each constituency votes for 1 Member of the Parliament. They, serve for 4 years. There are 100 Members of Parliament (MPs) in Mittsville. Parliament is lead by the Prime minister, who is elected by all of Mittsville and serves for 4 years.

State and national elections take place every alternate two years.

Ministries

The Ministries not technically a part of the government, but they do all the work that is needed to run Mittsville. When the Prime minister is elected, he appoints ministers to lead different ministries for a 4 year term. These ministers are not elected.

Currently, there are 12 Ministries:
• Trade & Commerce
• Science & Technology
• Education
• Health
• Finance & Economy
• Foreign Affairs
• Interior
• Justice
• Information
• Culture
• Industry & Agriculture
• Environment
These Ministries carry out the policies of the Mittsvillian parliaments and high council, and the day to day running of the nation. Each ministry usually has different sections for each state. The exception to this is Foreign affairs. Interestingly, Mittsville has no defence ministry. This will be dealt with in the “defence” section.

Passing laws

Any MP or High Councillor can propose bills to there respective government body.

State parliaments have the power to pass laws which apply to only that state. However, the prime minister has the power to block state laws from being passed.

The High council can pass laws that affect the whole country. Interestingly, the State parliaments have no power to stop laws that they do not approve of. This topic has sparked major controversy, but all the Prime ministers of Mittsville have said that allowing state parliaments to reject laws would lead to Mittsville breaking apart.

Geography

Location

Mittsville is situated on the south-western corner of TEN island, the main island of Aberdeen. Mittsville is roughly square in shape, with two land borders and two coastlines. The land is mainly flat, but there are some large hills in the centre of Mittsville, known as the central hills. There is also a large range of mountains on the eastern border, which is referred to as the East Mittsville Mountains, but lacks an official name. There is a large forest in the south of the country, and farming dominates the north-east and south-west of Mittsville.

Borders

Mittsville borders the areas known as plot 43 and 44 on the east, and plot 46 on the west. Therefore, it is very likely that Mittsville was once known as plot 45 before the name was registered in the regional government. Mittsville has two coastlines, the Highfolk Sea to the north, and the South Sea in the… south.

Climate

Mittsville has a mild climate, with mainly mild summers and cool winters. However as it is a large country, it is on average slightly warmer in the north. Most of Mittsville rarely has any snow, except for the East Mittsville Mountains, where snow in winter is common.

Elevations

Most of Mittsville is between 100 and 200 meters above sea level, except for the central hills, the East Mittsville Mountains, and within 50 miles of the coasts.
