Cerebrus

In 1920 a new voice was heard, the voice that would lead the nation from there on out, the voice of Cerebrus. Cerebrus (b. 1894-d.1928) was raised in an average, middle-class family. Very early on in his childhood records show a defiant rebellious attitude towards the government. He was arrested at thirteen years of age for telling classmates that he doubted that a war was really going on (it wasn’t) and if it was, it would be unjustified. He got off by the skin of his teeth because of his age, but his parents were fined. In 1912 Cerebrus went to collage, where he found his “insolent” ideas were actually accepted in some underground circles and that he had a certain charm or spark that drove people to listen to him. He realized in 1919 that people were confused and finally ready to accept a totally new ideology. In 1920 Cerebrus gave it to them. Cerebrus told people of the rights that all people shared, such as free speech, freedom of religion, freedom from fear, and most importantly, freedom of life. His ideas struck a cord with working men and intellectuals alike. In a daring plan, Cerebrus announced The Great Backlash, an act that would topple The Chosen Monarchs, and keep peaceful at the same time. Cerebrus realized that the soldiers and the government were totally at their knees without the people. In The Great Backlash, people simply refused to give anything to the regime or the military. The famous quote is “workers refused to work, farmers refused to farm, and masons refused to mason” the quote is sometimes parodied as “workers refused to work, farmers refused to farm, and thinkers refused to think.” It was a siege, with the outside world refusing to give goods to the insiders, to the military. It was only a matter of time before they cracked, and in 1927 they did. Skapetla had already committed suicide in 1925 to keep from formally calling defeat; Cerebrus said the eulogy in his funeral once again showing that love for your fellow man does not just extend to your friends. But in 1927 The Chosen Monarchs themselves stepped down, and were immediately incarcerated (the last of The Chosen Monarchs died in 1962). Cerebrus did not get to celebrate long however, for while writing his third book he was killed by an Ortheronion loyalist.

Cerebrista’s First Years (1930-1965)

On the first democratic vote for Cerebrista on December 12, 1930 (exactly one year after the Declaration of Indispensable Rights), Ty Winding won by 94% of the vote to no-ones surprise. Ty was famous for his defiant decision to keep out of World War One, which cut him off from many war faring nations. Many countries tried to tie Cerebrista with communism, due to their relatively close founding; Ty however debunked this by stating that his revolution had been peaceful and that Cerebrista still allowed private enterprise, unlike the Soviet Union. Ty spent most of his time simply guiding the fledgling nation towards the Cerebrista ideal, one of peace and generosity. Ty also had a reputation as a rabid anti-Nazi. Many of his speeches were directed after the “fascist peril”, he then upset the international community by not getting involved when Nazi Germany invaded Poland in 1939, many of his own people protested, chanting things like “Put your money where your mouth is”, Ty refused to stray from the First Article in the Declaration of Indispensable Rights. He did however, send medics to the front lines, which some said was not nearly enough.

After his designated ten years of Presidency, with two terms in office, Ty stepped down on December 12, 1940 and passed the presidency to a Mr. Victorian Mawkish. Victorian, or “Vic” to his supporters, was a dark horse, no one had heard of him before his fiery speeches captivated the nation. Victorian kept up the peace, and refused to get into the war one famous statement was “What can we do? Our country has been around for ten years and they want military support from us? We have no military to speak of and they still insist on our help? Our job is to set an example. Our job is to be the peace that is lacking.” He threw barbs at Joseph Stalin as well as Adolph Hitler, calling them Cut from the Same Cloth. “Talking Victorian” became slang around some circles in Cerebrista and in some foreign countries; it meant “talking with no intention to follow it up with actions”. Cerebrista was still not considered a “real country” by most of the international community, who still called it Ortheros, if they called it anything at all.

Victorian only was in office for five years, but he did set in stone the Cerebration peace principle. In 1945 a prominent Member of Parliament, Dr. Hantion Declivous, became the President of Cerebrista. Hantion was an inoffensive man who declared that the government had to look into itself instead of outwards, like Victorian had done. Hantion reformed the education system, which was in shambles, and he passed the “soft drugs” bill, which legalized all of what was considered to be “soft drugs” such as marihuana and tobacco, while heroin and cocaine remained illegal. The “soft drugs” bill has been a subject of debate every time a new drug comes out, and how it should be classified. Hantion was re-elected by a landslide in 1950, where his stance on free speech went to the forefront after a bill proposing the illegality of “outlaw radio” Hantion debated many long hours about this, first stating that the second article of the Declaration of Indispensable Rights does not limit the freedom of speech to only “paintings, books, or newspapers” but distinctly declares that all other media also have that freedom. He also attacks the vagueness of the bill, which could be taken to ban every form of non-propaganda radio program out there. The bill did not pass, in its place a bill that strictly declared that the government would never step into what the media ever did, no matter what the media. It was called “The Second Article Clarity Bill”

Hantion was a popular president, but he had to step down in 1955 to make way for the new president, Formica Abases. Formica was immediately subjected to one of the most long debated issues, even today, The Death Act. The Death Act was one that proposed to enact laws that legalized both abortion and euthanasia. Long arguments on whether the bill would conflict with the first article in the Declaration of Indispensable Rights. Eventually the bill barely passed, after two points were made. 1. On Abortion, fetuses are not actually living humans, but merely have the possibility to become humans. 2. On Euthanasia, The person who requests euthanasia would already be close to death, or in a persistent vegetative state, who only ask for their inevitable death to come quicker. Formica also increased funding for the police force, to take care of the escalating crime rates. Police are still called ‘mica’s (after Formica) by some of the populace to this day.

Formica stepped down voluntarily after his five year run, to quote him “There was nothing more I could think of doing.” The fifth president of Cerebrista was Mr. Penne Qualm, who was generally charged with just keeping in place the system that had already been gutted out by his forerunners. The most remarkable thing to happen under his time in power was the blossoming of a new generation that took its customs from the beat generation overseas, the new “rock and roll” from America and the eastern religions. They called themselves “protagonists” their influence on Cerebration life will come in the “culture” section. Hantion was known to be paranoid about the new generation, which many consider the reason that, in 1965, he lost his bid for re-election.

Cerebrista’s Midway Period (1965-1995)

Cerebrista’s new president was Fesdef Machantis, a fiery spokesman for the working man, condemning “consumer culture” in his wake. Companies were fined large amounts, often crippling them, for breaking one of the environmental/union rules. The populace of Cerebrista is still divided on Fesdef’s place in history; some call him a hero for worker’s rights while others call him a destroyer of the economy. Fesdef did not get a second term, due to his lack of compromises to his vision, going to his grave attacking corporations and greed.

Fesdef’s successor was a president in the mold of Victorian Mawkish, a president that would regularly discuss issues pertaining to the world as a whole, not just his own country. His name was Tiramisus “Thermo” Eilhoern He is infamous for declaring such statement as “The Royal Family of England is an obsolete and malicious system. The Royal Family as a whole should step down, along with all other monarchs of the world.”,” If I believed that anyone should be put to death, Richard Nixon would be that man.” And “The Vietnam War can and will only lead to tragedy, it is a monster, with America committing unbelievable monstrosities; I implore America to pull out, if she has even a shred of dignity left in her.” Never the less, he was immensely popular in his own country. With an open arm to the counter culture, Thermo proclaimed “the thin line” a theory that countries need to both help and respect the individual person while at the same time keep society as a whole contented. Tiramisus is regularly state as the most “fashionable” president. One of the first presidents to really use the youth of the nation to his advantage, he often dressed in loud clothes while addressing the country, and admitted to pass use of both cannabis and LSD. LSD was a large issue at the time, with more and more young people using it, in a landmark decision Tiramisus decided that LSD was a “soft drug” according to law, thus making it legal. Needless to say, he became even more popular with the counter culture. After two unbelievably successful terms, Tiramisus made way for the new president.

The new president was sworn in on December 12, 1980, a Mr. Gerry-Tome Flank, a much milder version of his predecessor. Unlike many previous presidents, he preferred to be called by his last name, which set him at odds with people who called regularly called him “Mr. Square” instead of his favored “Mr. Flank.” Mr. Flank is most famous for trying desperately to stave off the “Greed is good” mentality, while at the same time, trying to increase the rights of corporations. Mr. Flank was also an avid environmentalist, making 27 different national parks, all of which were off limits to logging and hunting. He passed “The Clean World” act of 1983, in which he expresses the need for alternative fuel sources, and the illegality of dumping in any but the safest ways. “Mother Earth is not a toy” is perhaps his most famous quote, though some will say “Ty didn’t know about the problems of pollution back in 1929 when he wrote the Declaration of Indispensable Rights, if he had, a right to clean environment would certainly be the twelfth article.” Despite his best efforts, Mr. Flank failed his bid for reelection and left the office in 1985.

The next president was Nasturtium Kindlier, a seemingly soft spoken man who was known for his take-no-prisoners attitude while debating. Nasturtium continued to stay out of the UN, stating that Cerebrista needed to set an example and that it couldn’t happen if Cerebrista was just another face in the crowd in The United Nations. Many Cerebrations along with many of the international community were afraid that Cerebrista was sealing itself in, removing chances for diplomacy. After what seemed to many as a rigged election, Kindlier won a second term. Kindlier tried to put into action several laws that would curb the freedoms that were granted by the Declaration of Indispensable Rights, even a bill that would allow war on “justifiable terms.” Nothing in the bill brought forth what “justifiable terms” really was, that coupled with the fact that Cerebrista remained strictly caused the bill, and all the others like it, to be strongly rejected by Parliament. Nasturtium is generally considered the worst president in the history of Cerebrista, and his ten-year reign has many people shuddering about what could have happened.

The Modern Era of Cerebrista (1995-Present)

In 1995 the current president, Sa’do, was elected, Sa’do had been a well respected Member of Parliament for many years before running for the presidency. Sa’do has the honor of being the first non-Ortheronion president in the history of Cerebrista, Sa’do’s both sides of his grandparents came to Cerebrista in 1945 from a small island in the Pacific Ocean. Detractors condemn Sa’do for being overly restrained when dealing with several hard-hitting issues, and the fact that he enlisted Cerebrista into the U.N despite years of absence.

Sa’do has made growing international relationships his cause, from frequent meetings with other leaders from A More Peaceful World, which included the now infamous “Inaugural Ball”; he has taken Cerebrista out of self-imposed period of hiding. Whether this is a good or bad thing is still discussed at long lengths among both Parliament leaders and the populace.

Sa’do is now in his last year of presidency, December 11 being his last day in office. The new presidency seems to be down to seven people, ranging from philosophies and important issues that they will act on if elected to office. The direction that Cerebrista takes could take yet another wild turn still.
