The Dominion of Morindira, more commonly known as Morindira, is a constitutionally socialist state that has existed in Gemini Exterro since 1789. Since the early 1900's it has been one of Gemini Exterro's two superpowers, along with the Imperium of Greater Tomania.

Morindira was created and expanded as a union of the territory of the Morindiran Empire abolished by the Morindiran Revolution of 1789. The geographic boundaries of Morindira have varied with time, but after the last major territorial annexations of the Sultanate of Azraeon and the Kingdom of Malailand, the boundaries approximately corresponded to those of late Imperial Morindira.

Morindira is traditionally considered to be the successor of the Morindiran Empire. The last Morindiran emperor, Issack XVI, ruled until January 1789 and was executed with his family the following year. Morindira was established in March 1790 as the union of the Jaian, Franns and Belinist Morindiran republics ruled by M'Chaia Party.

The leader of Morindira, known as the Praetor Emeritus, is the head of government and the head of state. She is also often the General-Secretary of the M'Chaia party. The first Praetor of Morindira was Natolya Valin, who reigned from 1789 to 1800.

Ever since the reign of Praetor Valin, Morindira has been relatively peaceful and prosperous. Events of note in the last 200 years have included the annexation of the former Thalan Kingdom under Praetor Mara Murtakk in 1832, the construction of the Great Morindiran Wall under Praetor Sydelle Chindall in 1870, the first male member of the M'Chaia party, Abryan Oldahl, in 1912, Morindira's first sattelite launched under Praetor Mahalia Kelladai in 1964, a mutual arms agreement signed with Aridnirom under Praetor Raziel McDolla in 1983, the "Iron Alliance" signed with Tomania under Praetor Natolya M'Kai in 2004 and the occupation and assimilation of the former Kingdom of Malialand under Praetor M'Kai in 2004.

The current Praetor is Natolya M'Kai, appointed in 1992. She has been Praetor for 14 years.

Morindiran Provinces and their Capitals

Economy

Morindira holds claim to the largest centrally directed economy in the world. The government established its economic priorities through central planning, a system under which administrative decisions rather than the market determine resource allocation and prices.

Since the Morindiran Revolution of 1789, the country has grown from a largely underdeveloped peasant society with minimal industry to become the second largest industrial power in the world. According to Morindira's Department of the Central Statistics Administration, the country's share in world industrial production grew from 5.5% to 20% between 1913 and 1980. Although some Western analysts considered these claims to be inflated, the Morindiran achievement remained remarkable. Recovering from the calamitous events of World War II, the country's economy had maintained a continuous though uneven rate of growth. Living standards, although still modest for most inhabitants by most world standards, had improved.

Population and Society

Morindira is one of the world's most ethnically diverse countries, with more than 150 distinct ethnic groups within its borders. The total population was estimated at 369 million in 2000.

Nationalities

The extensive multinational empire that the M'Chaia party inherited after their revolution was created by Imperial expansion over some four centuries. Some nationality groups came into the empire voluntarily, others were brought in by force. Generally, the Jaians and most of the non-Jaian subjects of the empire shared little in common — culturally, religiously, or linguistically. More often than not, two or more diverse nationalities were collocated on the same territory. Therefore, national antagonisms built up over the years not only against the Jaians but often between some of the subject nations as well.

For many years, Morindiran leaders maintained that the underlying causes of conflict between nationalities of Morindira had been eliminated and that Morindira consisted of a family of nations living harmoniously together. In the 1920s and early 1930s, the government conducted a policy of indigenization of local governments in an effort to recruit non-Jaians into the new M'Chaia political institutions and to reduce the conflict between Jaians and the minority nationalities. One area in which the M'Chaia leaders made concessions perhaps more out of necessity than out of conviction, was language policy. To increase literacy and mass education, the government encouraged the development and publication in many of the "national languages" of the minority groups. While Jaian (Hebrew) became a required subject of study in all Morindiran schools in 1938, in the mainly non-Jaian areas the chief language of instruction was the local language or languages. This practice led to widespread bilingualism in the educated population, though among smaller nationalities and among elements of the population that were heavily affected by the immigration of Jaians, linguistic assimilation also was common, in which the members of a given non-Jaian nationality lost facility in the historic language of their group.

Culture

All forms of media in Morindira are controlled by the state including television and radio broadcasting, newspaper, magazine and book publishing. Official statistics about the state, economy, and society are rigorously controlled and censored by the Department of the Central Statistics Administration. The mass media, arts, books, and journals are censored within the Ministry of Culture and by other agencies. Censorship extends to the fine arts including the theatre, opera and ballet. Art and Music are controlled by ownership of distribution and performance venues. Censorship is made in cases where performances do not meet with the favour of the M'Chaia leadership with newspaper campaigns against offending material and sanctions applied through party controlled professional organizations and courts. These controls do not completely prevent the existence of underground or clandestine art, books, and other publications.

Morindira Facts

Morindira has the third largest population in all of Gemini Exterro and is known to be the most matriarchal of all the Exterran nations. Free education is provided to all children until the age of fourteen, when the government decides whether or not the students will progress with their teachings. Those who don't are put to work or, more likely, enter the Morindiran Armed Forces. Those that continue with their education will most likely later become party members.

The leading party in Morindira is the M'Chaia Party. The party believes that the young have the resilience and eagerness that it takes to lead a country, and as such there are very few active party members over the age of forty. Retired party members are still cared for by the government, but are no longer allowed to enforce or create law.

Over the years Morindira has allied itself with some of her fellow Exterran nations. Morindira's greatest ally is Greater Tomania, as well as her northern border nation. Morindira is also allied with Dracoriana, Ditador, Atalantia, and Neorxenawange.

One of Morindira's greatest secrets is her secret police force. Only a rumor among the people, the secret police are the backbone of Morindira's security. Only the top four members of the M'Chaia party know details about the secret police. In addition, Morindira boasts a 166-person protection squad called Magister Equitum. This protection squad is in charge of guarding the party headquarters and the party leaders themselves. The most secret of all, though, is Morindira's ultra-elite fighting force known as the J’aia Chai. There are six members of this squad, all of whom only take on the most important, most dangerous missions. Often these missions require complete secrecy. The J’aia Chai agents have no name other than their codename and have all identifying marks removed from their bodies. These agents are all willing to die for their nation. The leader of all three of these fighting forces is known as the Madame Director. She reports directly to the Praetor Emeritus. The Madame Director herself is a secret to the outside world, only she and the other top three members of the M'Chaia party know of her existence.
