Defaultia (3/0/0)

Sysophood granted by Goobergunchia 22:04, 26 Sep 2004 (GMT)
Voided due to inactivity by Goobergunch|? 23:33, 20 Apr 2005 (GMT)

Defaultia has been one of the earliest NSwikians and has written (or at least begun) many important articles, such as Moderator, Region, and Region crashing. Defaultia has also provided us with the temporary logo. --Goobergunchia 20:36, 19 Sep 2004 (GMT)

  • Knoot: Well, I'm not sure how to count the votes here (I'd say Frisbeeteria counts as 'pro' too. The lesson of Florida: when in doubt, count the votes in your favour ;) Anyway I'll just wait untill people come and complain about my inherent bias and incompetence.
Meh. I don't count the nomination as a vote, but I'm for letting Frisbeeteria vote - when I nominated Defaultia, I immediately voted "1. Goobergunchia As in nomination". --Goobergunchia 16:34, 4 Oct 2004 (GMT)

  • Since it seems particularly pointless to wait a proper seven days, I'm granting Knoot provisional sysop status now - however, the vote will remain open for the full seven-day period and this status can be revoked if there's a shift in the voting margin. --Goobergunch|? 20:17, 7 Oct 2004 (GMT)

  • I'm not sure I'm really keen on the idea of someone who can pointedly indicate on his Jolt Forum Profile that his occupation is "emotionally harassing SeOCC" is the kind of individual that should be moderating a site where you're probably going to be having a lot of contribution by the CACE community, of which myself and SeOCC are a part. There's a clear wedge between much of the CACE and former SATO/WBO entourage that, should either of the polarized members of those parties become moderators of the NSwiki site, might compromise an impartial view of the NationStates world should any one of them get... shall we say... as "childish" as that profile entry? --Galdago

  • Fris : I realize that not many people know me as a player, so I've compiled a list of some of the topics I've been either principal author or a significant contributor. Some of these, like Sirocco's Language of NationStates posts I've merely transcribed and Wikified. Others, like Gameplay and Halls of Memory, germinated as ideas on the forums, but grew into what you see here. Hope this helps.

  • I've been quite pleased by this nominee's performance as a wiki community member, but I'm concerned by the relatively low number of edits, as well as timing issues. The Wikipedia standard, such as it is, calls for typically 1000 to 2500 edits before many users will consider them for the position. Obviously, this is a new wiki with many fewer pages, but that doesn't mean there isn't a similar demand. I'd like to hear from the nominee (assuming s/he acccepts) explain why they would make a good admin before casting my ballot. → Fris Θtalk 01:19, 8 Dec 2004 (GMT)

Pacitalia has been a dedicated NS Wikian and has written some fantastic articles, such as his entry on Pacitalian and (in my opinion), his summary of the Second War of the Roach. He would make an excellent administrator. --Sarzonia (user talk) | Sarzonia

Gruenberg2 (5/0/0)

Sysophood granted by Goobergunch|? on 00:05, 7 November 2005 (GMT) Resigned 20:15, 21 November 2006 (GMT)

Gruenberg2 has stepped in to fill the void left when RL demands slammed Goobergunch and NS Mod demands took Frisbeeteria away from NSwiki. He has been especially helpful in reverting vandalism and watching out for linkspammers. His edit history is not as extensive as some, but much of what he has done is devoted towards making the wiki better and safer. This should be a principal requirement for NSwiki sysops.

A few generic questions to provide guidance for voters:

1. What sysop chores, if any, would you anticipate helping with?
A. I spend a lot of time online, and I usually have a tab open on Special:Recentchanges. As such, I've recently been involved in quite a few reverts and reports of vandalism. If I am accepted by the NSwiki community as a sysop, I would be able and willing to go further in the pursuit of preventing vandalism. I would probably be less likely to contribute new Infoboxes or engage in anything particularly technical. I still believe a sysop is really no different to a 'normal' user, however, and intend on continuing to contribute to the best of my abilities regardless.
2. Of your articles or contributions to NSwiki, are there any about which you are particularly pleased, and why?
A. Um...not really, actually. My pages are in bits and pieces, really. I don't tend to spend long pieces of time on particular pages; I prefer scanning around for where I can help. Gruenberg, Gruenberger species and Economy of Gruenberg are my most extensive works; both are dull and unfinished however. I enjoyed contributing pages such as 0 of 0, Avatars and Signature. I was also reasonably pleased with my contributions to Xanthal and Mirfakan. That said though, I would rather users looked to my reverts in recent instances of vandalism and linkspam, rather than what are at times far from exemplary articles I have created. NSwiki has many better pieces to offer, and I would not see myself as necessarily a 'sit down and write a Featured Article in 20 minutes' sort of contributor. That said, I am of course happy to start articles, work on clean-up, or add finishing touches.
3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
A. The obvious example here would be in the wake of the deletion of Hogsweat, when more than one person took it upon themselves to shamelessly vandalise the Wiki; this included some edits to my pages. I swiftly reverted the most offensive comments, but did my best to avoid getting into an edit war, as I felt that wiping out everything would only encourage them more: best to leave it until the fuss died down. I contacted the sysops via #nswiki and alerted them to the vandalism; they issued tempbans and deleted pages as appropriate. I later received an apology from one perpetrator.
I believe in the avoidance of edit wars, if only to save Goober's server, but also because rampaging ping pong should be left for the UN forum. It is not good for any Wiki to see constant revert-revert-revert, and I would rather an offensive page remained intact for 24 hours than was reverted 24 times. If I feel a situation is arising where I may get into an edit war, I would back out at the third revert. NOTE: this is a personal, and not an NSwiki-endorsed, policy. I am sure there will be future occurrences where my neutrality is questioned - and for the record I must mention my membership of the ADN and NSO - but this is the case with any NSwikian. If I feel it is inappropriate for me to edit or comment, I will step out and inform another sysop. That does of course not mean I intend on checking my editing habits: we should all strive for neutrality in any and every case.Gruen2alk 01:48, 31 October 2005 (GMT)

Sysophood granted by Goobergunch|? on 22:08, 7 January 2006 (GMT)

He's been a HUGE asset to NSwiki over the past month or two, and has shown he has advanced skill and high interest in contributing and bettering this wiki. He's helped fill the void where it's needed and made it seem like we still have five continuously active sysops. And, most importantly, he tells users what they're doing wrong and how to fix it but in friendly, cooperative tones. Some general optional questions for Ceorana to answer, to help those not familiar with his contributions.

1. What sysop chores, if any, would you anticipate helping with?
A I anticipate helping mostly with cleanup-style tasks: helping users move pages, getting rid of vandalism/vandalous users, deleting pages with consensus, helping new users, etc. I'll try not to be quite as aggressive as I have been in fixing stuff: just today I found some vandalism, reverted it, looked at the IP's contribs, found that Gruenberg had been vandalized by him and reverted it, only to realize that that was two months ago and had been reverted long ago. I'll try to avoid that happening in the future. :)
2. Of your articles or contributions to NSwiki, are there any about which you are particularly pleased, and why?
A I suppose my nation page, Ceorana, is probably my largest contribution. I've created a few infoboxes (Infobox School and a few others like Template:Ceo-Officials that I use for my own nation pages.) I guess most of my contributions have been small ones, like categorizing a page or fixing code that someone didn't get quite right. I also started Nation codes, although it's been changed a lot since I started it.
3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
A I've had some minor debates about article content (see Talk: Violet), but none that really escalated into a "conflict", per se.
4. What do you think the goal of NSWIKI is?
A. The goal of Nswiki is, at the most basic level, to create an encyclopedia of all things relating to NationStates. But I think it's more complex than that. NSwiki should be a useful reference for both new and old players: one to research a game term, to find a new region, to research a nation for RP, to write about nations, to find a nation to invade, etc. In my eyes, we should try to restructure pages that say "MyRegion is a wonderful region full of palm trees. We have an awesome democratic government. Follow the below steps to move to our region" because they don't provide useful content, just advertisements.
5. What do you understand by consensus?
A. [I assume this is asking what I believe constitutes consensus. If this is wrong, please clarify] I would say that consensus is simply the state of everyone at least understanding a strong majority viewpoint. For example, if 75% of a group agreed with something, but the other 25% had a valid, material, voiced opposition, then that, in my mind, does not necessarily constitute consensus. However, if only 60% of a group votes yes, 30% abstains, and the other 10% had low-key opposition (i.e. "Meh, I don't know, why don't we just leave it?"), then that could constitute consensus in some low-importance votes. I'd say that if consensus is unclear, like in my examples, then it might be worthwhile to wait and see what new opinions and ideas are put on the table.

Swilatia (3/0/1)

Sysophood granted by Pacitalia|(talk) on 05:10, 4 March 2006 (GMT)

Swilatia (talkcontribs) has been a great contributer to NSwiki, both in cleanup work and in taking initiative to Be bold. He's responsible for the creation of Template:Infobox NationEx, Template:Infobox City 2, and probably a few other templates, as well as general janatorial cleanups to a wide variety of pages that expand well beyond ones relating to Swilatia and close attention to meta pages and talk pages. I think that he would do a great job as sysop and use the powers responsibly and effectively. For the reasons stated above, I hereby nominate Swilatia for sysopship. –|–– Ceo \ rant 02:19, 24 February 2006 (GMT)

I can't say support or oppose basically because you're unknown to me - I've seen you editing around here but I just haven't looked at your work or gotten to know you, so if possible, Swilatia, would you consider talking with me for a while on an IM client? I'd hate to call it a job interview but I just can't reasonably vote for someone when I don't know them. I'd have a few questions for you, but nothing too serious. • Although we probably don't need another sysop, I think Swilatia will go above and beyond mundane tasks and use the powers to significantly improve NSwiki. –|–– Ceo \ rant 02:19, 24 February 2006 (GMT)
  • Agreed with Goobergunch in response to Gruenberg's comment: if my vote can pass 2/0/2 then Swilatia's ought to be able to pass with 3/0/1, even if you don't take the numbers too mathematically.–|–– Ceo \ rant 03:52, 2 March 2006 (GMT)

Some generic questions for Swilatia:

1. What sysop chores, if any, would you anticipate helping with on NSwiki?

I will problaly have to see that later when I gain the status, if I do. My only wish on NSwiki is to simply improve it. --Swilatia (Not Swilly!!) 12:57, 24 February 2006 (GMT)

2. Of your articles or contributions to NSwiki, are there any about which you are particularly pleased, and why?

Usually I think the most useful contributions I have made was the creation of new infobox templates, as then any user can easily have a infobox of a certain type --Swilatia (Not Swilly!!) 12:57, 24 February 2006 (GMT)

3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?

I have not been yet in any editing conflicts --Swilatia (Not Swilly!!) 12:57, 24 February 2006 (GMT)

Oppose #Oppose to cancel out Gruen's support - that reason that we need another sysop doesn't hold, as if we really did you'd have supported my nom too. Use your head before saying things you'll regret - if we really need another support you should not have opposed my nom. Bias? So much for having objective sysops. Gruen's conduct is appalling. LE (WP) | Talk 05:46, 18 May 2006 (GMT)

  1. Calm down. The fact is, you used this page previously "to see what people thought of you". I didn't think appropriate conduct, and I won't support you for sysop on account of it. Expressing preference in candidates isn't "bias"; it's simply me exercising discretion. Surely you wouldn't expect me to blindly vote for anyone who was nominated?
Furthermore, Ceo and I have caught a lot of the linkspamming - with help from users like you and Bedi. I don't consider that a major sysop priority. I think we need a new one because while we're busy taking care of that, there are actual articles to help with. No votes for deletion ever get any discussion, there's never any attempts at cleanup, articles remain NPOV for months...and you didn't indicate willingness to help with any of them. So, sorry, but I'm going to stick by my votes.
To expand a little: I don't think we need anyone to help with linkspam. It's annoying, sure, but it doesn't do any great harm if it takes two days to clear it, block them, etc. I don't think we're swamped by it, at present; if I felt we were, then I would actually support your nomination, my other misgivings notwithstanding. When I say "we need another sysop", I mean "we need another sysop"; not "we need someone to help with linkspam". We need someone willing to work with a variety of tasks. Jey is a regular contributor, he's familiar with various code formats, he's written some decent articles. I'm sure that applies to you as well, but you didn't say that: you presented yourself as simply coming to help with linkspam - something I don't think we need.E
If you wish to register a complaint about my conduct...well, I'm not sure what procedure is. Talk to Pacitalia or email Goober, I suppose. ~Gruen2 07:49, 18 May 2006 (GMT) (Also, please remember to update the vote tally.)

Questions for the candidate

  1. I saw a lot of stuff about vandalism - something to do with your friends - between you and Ceo on your talk page. What was that about? ~Gruen2 22:03, 17 May 2006 (GMT)
A: NationStates is a rather popular game at my school that is known to nearly everyone there, even those not actually playing the game. One adverse affect of this is that NS becomes known to the less mature population in the school, who found it humorous to vandalize my nation and user pages simply because I've spent a considerable amount of time on them. Jey° 22:15, 17 May 2006 (GMT)
  2. What sysop chores do you anticipate dealing with? [translation: will you help with the linkspam? please? ;)]
A: As a sysop, my main goal would be to improve NSWiki in whatever way possible. I will be prepared to deal with any sysop chores that are needed in maintaining the wiki, especially dealing with spam, vandalism, and cleanup work. Jey° 12:37, 18 May 2006 (GMT)
  3. Have you ever been in any edit conflicts? If so, how did you resolve them?
A: Aside from the vandalism of my page (if you could call that an edit conflict), I have not been involved in any. Jey° 12:37, 18 May 2006 (GMT)

Aridd (3/0/0)

Sysophood granted by Pacitalia|(talk) on 08:00, 30 September 2006 (GMT)

Aridd's helped a lot, especially in sports articles, and is taking responsibility for things like welcoming users, moving incorrectly titled pages, and other general sysoppy chores. He's also shown that he's a good worker and a good editor, and he's written a lot of good articles. It's time to give him a promotion to sysop. Comments/Questions

  • My only concern is whether we need that extra sysop right now. Our only problem now is database errors, since we have eradicated autovandalism, that being linkspamming. Perhaps the lack of voting on this nomination is a sign that either (a) we're the only truly active users, regardless of position, around here, or (b) most users recognise that, for the size of our community and the level of activity, we don't really need the extra help at the moment, therefore, out of respect for Aridd (who, in my opinion, has proven himself an important and invaluable member of the community), they are just not voting instead of outright opposing the nomination. As is procedure (convention) for bureaucrats, I neither support nor oppose Aridd's nomination, but I also am neutral on the preceding concerns. I appreciate Aridd's concise responses to the questions below, as well. 1,337 edits since 29 October 2005. (( Pacitalkia )) Time sent: 19:13, 23 September 2006 (GMT)
    • We don't need any extra help? Have you seen Category:Candidates for speedy deletion, for example, lately? I don't think we need many sysops at all. But we do need some active ones. I appreciate people have times when they can help more, and when they can help less, and I mean no slight on those who have given time to NSwiki, but right now, not many of us are doing that much - including me. Aridd is an active user, and I trust he'd be an active sysop. And we definitely do need more of those. ~Gruen2alk 13:05, 24 September 2006 (GMT)

Some generic questions...

1. What sysop chores, if any, would you anticipate helping with?
A For the most part, I'd continue contributing as I have been doing (including tidying up articles, categorising, reverting vandalism, leaving suggestions in the talk pages of new contributors...), but I'd be up to dealing with other specific tasks if there's a need.
2. Of your articles or contributions to NSwiki, are there any about which you are particularly pleased, and why?
A Some articles which I started because I felt they'd be needed/useful (List of Ambassadors to the United Nations, List of international airports, Olympic Games), including categories and templates, in the hopes of making NSwiki tidier easier to navigate (Category:Economy, Category:Heads of State or Government, Category:Universities, Template:TLDs, Template:National Football Teams...). Maybe I'm obsessed with categorising, but when I see articles dealing with the same topic as it pertains to different nations, I always think it'd be nice if readers could access them all through a category or a template.
On a more personal note, I've put quite a bit of work into articles about my own nation, and was rather pleased to finally get History of Ariddia done.
3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
A No, no conflicts. Even when I've been annoyed at something and pointed it out, the author has generally appreciated the input. (I'm thinking mainly of this.) The only problem is when there's simply no response at all. In which case I usually make what edits are necessary to tidy things up, without contradicting what an author obviously wanted to convey about his or her own nation, and I leave a notice in the talk page in case of input or reactions.
4. What do you think the goal of NSwiki is?
A. As an encyclopedia, to be a repository of data about the fictional NS world (and of course the game itself), in encyclopedic form (which means NPOV, and a certain tidy, legible, third person format). Which is why I've edited articles to make them tidier, more NPOV and what I call more "encyclopedia-like".
Also, of course, NSwiki is an (unofficial) extension of NationStates, so the goal is for contributors to have fun while contributing.
5. What does consensus mean to you? (aargh, that sounded way too much like a standardized test question...)
A. Mainly, not going around forcing edits and delving into edit wars. In keeping with NPOV, contributors should be able to agree on the content of an article. Which also means that sysops don't go around imposing their interpretation on everyone else, but try to take part in reaching an agreement to resolve disputes. (Is the test over? :p)
