NationStates International Runner Competition (NS.IRC) is a friendly sports event where the best international runners compete against each other. Residents & Citizens of A More PeacefulWorld and members of allied regions are allowed to participate. Other nations are allowed on invitation.

Introduction

Sozy (The Immigration Officer and Citizen of A More PeacefulWorld) noticed that in his region there were not any sports activities. On the 26 August 2005, Sozy posted his ideas on how this competition could be held. The invented system was something new for the members, but the active core of Citizens seemed interested and soon people enlisted their participants. Sozy put a limit on the amount of participating nations, for this was the first competition to be held in the region, and some features have to be tested.

Game

The running is fully RP-wise, however, active participation is not necessarily essential. The competition hoster is expected to give a brief story for the outcome of every race, and a story about the final outcome of the competition.

Procedure

If you want to join in a competition, the first step is take contact with Sozy and provide him with the following information. A competition is actually split into a women’s and men’s competition, every nation is expected to give a full name of both a male and female character who will join the competition.

Give each of your characters five characteristics (see the lsit below). You can only choose one characteristic per row. Your male and female participant must have at least two characteristics in common, and at least one different. Characteristics have significant effects on the performances of a runner. An example is the difference beteen the characteristics anaerobic and aerobic. An anaerobic athlete is more likely to perform at best on a sprint track, an aerobic athlete is more likely to perform well in the ultramarathon. Some characteristics have high influences on the weather chosen. Collectivist runners like to be surrounded by supporters (and perform better in a Stadium) whereas individualist runner feels more comfortable with a silent run on a mountain (provided he has the navigational capabilities to orientate on the mountain slope, but this skill will not be helpful running a marathon on an asphalt road).

Each character is allowed to train two skills (characteristics), for instance A and D. Meaning he will be able to use these skills more effectively. The male and female characters of your nation must exercise at least one (two is allowed, but not always advisable) skill together.

It is expected that a nation will keep the same runner for all future competitions. You can decide to change your runners, but it is not advisable (and more paperwork). It is important to know that you cannot exchange runners during a competition.

Location

A feature that makes this sport so interesting to participate in is that it is literally international. Runners will compete against each other in all countries of the participating nations. This means you have to decide what kind of location this will be. You can choose between various of terrain, distances and weather types. You cannot chose the same terrain, distance or weather type of the nation that enlisted directly before you.

It is expected that nations will come up with a different location each new competition. This will keep the game more exciting.

List of Characteristics

As said above, you have to pick five of these characteristics for each of your characters. Notice that you will not be able to change characteristics of a runner once you have posted them. You can only choose one per row (example: not anaerobic and aerobic. All characteristics are equally waged up against each other, there isn’t exactly one better than the other.

  1. Anaerobic < or > Aerobic
  2. Navigational < or > Technologic
  3. Muscled < or > Determined
  4. Collectivist < or > Individualist
  5. Emotional < or > Stable

Loaction

How will your running location look like? You can choose between a couple of things. You have to choose a terrain, a distance and a weather type. All of your choices will have significant impact on the performances of the runners.

Terrain:

  1. Track (Stadium) (1,2,3,4 ~)
  2. Asphalt Road (3,4,5,6)
  3. Cross-Country (3,4,5)
  4. Mountain (trail) (4,5)
  5. Mountain (cross-country) (4,5,6) Note: Must be #1 Snowy weather!

Note: ~ Some terrains cannot be combined with all distances, the distances it can be combined with are between brackets.

Distance:

  1. Sprint 60metres (0.04 miles, 65.62 yards)
  2. Short distance 400 metres (0.25 miles, 437.46 yards)
  3. Middle distance 1,500 metres (0.93 miles, 1640.42 yards)
  4. Long distance 10,000 metres (6.2 miles, 10936.13 yards)
  5. Marathon 42,195 metres (26.2 miles, 45,760 yards)
  6. Ultramarathon 75,000metres max. (46.6 miles, 82,020 yards)

Weather:

  1. Snowy
  2. Rainy
  3. Foggy
  4. Cloudy
  5. Sunny

Scorination

As said before scores are largely dependent on the characteristics of your character. The terrain has high impact on one’s navigational/technologic and Collectivist/Individualist skills. The distance has high impact on one’s Anaerobic/Aerobic and Muscled/Determined skills. The weather has high impact on one’s Emotional/Stable skills.

  • The latter also have influence in the long term an emotional runner who looses will score 5% lower than the regular score of the next race, the reverse goes for the opposite (winning). The same happens to a stable player, however with less extremes, 3% instead of 5%.
  • Someone who runs in its homeland will have an increase of 2.5% in points gained during the race. After each race the gained points are divided by the points of the races before.
  • You can "earn" experience points by winning races:
    • Winning a race: 0.1 experience points.
    • Winning one of the ties (Blue Tie, Red Tie, Yellow tie): 0.3 experience points.
    • Winning Bronze: 0.5 experience points.
    • Winning Silver: 1 experience point.
    • Winning gild: 2 experience points.

Injuries can happen.

  • When your characteristics are out of balance. A difference of more than 7% between the highest and the lowest is already dangerous and it will increase the chance of an injury.
  • Winning too many races (3 in a row) will increase the chance of an injury.

An injured runner will have the points gained at the race decrease by 5%. An injury lasts: the decrease will be 3% in the first race after the injury and 1% in the second race after the injury. And injury does never happen more often than once per runner in an entire competition.
