The NXS serves hundreds of cities; shown here is X43 (formerly X245) in Carbondale. Full-sized version

The National Expressway System is a network of freeways serving over sixty-five major Bedistani cities, and is a network of high-speed limited-access highways covering most of the nation. As a general rule, major north-south routes have odd numbers and major east-west routes have even numbers, with multiples of five indicating the most important routes. Route numbers are highest in the north and west and smallest in the south and east.

Numbering system

Old system

The NXS, constructed in the 2070s, originally used a grid-based system for one- and two-digit routes. Odd-numbered routes ran north to south, with numbers increasing to the west. Even-numbered routes ran west to east, with numbers increasing to the north. Numbers ending in 5 and 0 were assigned to the most major routes, and connecting routes were given three-digit numbers, the last two digits of which were a reference to its "parent" (e.g. X415 was a western bypass of Beaagkh, connecting to X15 at either end).

New system

In January 2100, the Bedistan Department of Transportation announced it was going to use a new numbering system for the network. The reason for the change has not been officially released, but it is rumored that the NXS is going to be extended into what is now known as East Bedistan, formerly Tingitana, and the grid system would have been incompatible with this extension.

Single-digit routes

Sonoma City is the hub of the new system, and most single-digit routes run outward from it:

  • X1: Southeastward to Columbia. This route formerly carried the designations X65, X50, and X25.
  • X2: Westward to Hudson. This route formerly carried the designation X60.
  • X3: Northwestward through New Town to the northern border. This route formerly carried the designation X65.
  • X4: Northward through Griffin to the Pedrian border. This route formerly carried the designation X35.
  • X5: Northeastward to Eagle's Rest. This route formerly carried the designations X66 and X13. The portion between Lolestu and Sisna-li has not yet been built; until then, a temporary routing of X5 exists along former X70 and X13 between the two cities.
  • X6: Eastward to Jamestown. This route formerly carried the designation X60.

Currently, the only exception to this rule is X7, which runs along former X15 in the Verdena portion of Bedistan.

There are also two new proposed routes, X8 and X9. X8 is to run from Kumbara northeastward through Somosi and Apto to Snolaï. X9 will begin in Edsoburo, passing through Kenie, Kikiö, and Savana, finally ending in Senóia.

Two-digit routes

Other major routes receive two-digit numbers based on their location relative to Sonoma City. The Calanian portion of Bedistan is divided into six "zones", which define the first digit of routes falling entirely within those zones:

  • Zone 1: West of X1 and south of X2
  • Zone 2: North of X2 and south of X3
  • Zone 3: North of X3 and west of X4
  • Zone 4: East of X4 and north of X5
  • Zone 5: East of X5 and north of X6
  • Zone 6: East of X1 and south of X6

In addition, the Verdena portion of Bedistan and the nearby islands are assigned to Zone 7, the Paleoparipia portion of Bedistan is assigned to Zone 8, and the Evestigatus portion of Bedistan is assigned to Zone 9.

Within a zone, route numbers are assigned in clockwise order (with Sonoma City, again, as the center). In the case of routes that pass through more than one zone, the route is numbered based on the farthest-clockwise zone it enters. For instance, if a route passes through zones 5, 6, and 1, its first digit will be 1. This rule is much stricter for zones 1-7 than it is for zones 8 and 9.

Three-digit routes

Three-digit routes in the new system generally serve the same purpose as three-digit routes in the old system; they serve as shorter connecting routes, usually near large cities. They are typically numbered as derivations from two-digit routes, much as in the old system, though here the "parent" route is denoted by the middle digit – a route with the middle digit 3, for instance, is a "child" route of a one- or two-digit route whose last digit is 3. The first digit is still defined by which zone the child route is in; thus the spur from X42 to Spring House is numbered X220 rather than X420, as it is in zone 2.

List of routes

Routes highlighted in yellow are not yet completed. Routes highlighted in red will change number due to construction at a later date. Routes highlighted in green have had their number changed after the new numbering system was implemented.

In the "old number(s)" column, numbers in parentheses indicate an old number the route will inherit during current or future extensions. Numbers in brackets indicate old numbers the route has had since the 2100 renumbering.
