National Referendum in Zaaherland 2005

Referendum

The Referendum was called by the Parliament, after the Parliament of Zaaherland had passed the National Minority Act. The Referendum was accepted by the President Adree Vorez and the date was set by the Government to Oktober 18.

The Government was lobbing for a YES, when the opposition with DUP and ZNDP where lobbing for a NO.

System

The Country was divided into 250 single member districts. In every district every voter had to vote for either a YES candidate or a NO candidate. Every candidate that was elected had to vote like their district did.

Results

Over 96,9% of the voters turned out.

  • YES- 132 seats (65,4%)
  • NO- 118 seats (35,6%)

The Referendum Council met in Hertogenburg on October 19. Every elected candidate sworn loyalty to the Republic of Zaaherland. After this the Coucil passed the Referendum.

Aftermath

The NO side got a unexpected large support. Many Conservative Englishspeaking and Conservative Zaaherdüdze voted NO. Many of them where against the reforms because many of them thought that the reforms where against the religious life style of the Zaaherland People. The Küsterfs minority had only 12 districts where they where in majority, in all of these the result was a large majority of YES votes. The strong ZRP foot hold Potrafer County voted NO with 55,5%.
