Biography

Natolya began her career in the party early in life -- very early. At birth M'Kai was recognized as having certain characteristics that made her an ideal candidate for Morindira's secret police. She was taken from the hospital's nursery by the government. Her parents were told she had died of pneumonia. She was trained from birth to serve in the secret police. At age 18 she became a member of the secret police's sniper squad. At age 20 she was selected to become a member of the ultra-elite fighting force called the J’aia Chai. Her death was faked and all records of her existence were destroyed. According to J'aia Chai procedure, her fingerprints were scarred beyond recognition and all identifying marks were removed from her body. For the next 2 years she served as a member of the J'aia Chai, taking on extremely dangerous, extremely secret missions. She accomplished them all. In fact, she accomplished a most difficult task -- she survived her time in the J'aia Chai, becoming one of only 5 women in history to have done the same.

When the government released her from the J'aia Chai she was appointed Madame Director at which point she was allowed to take a name once again. She chose Natolya from Morindira's key founder -- Natolya Valin -- and M'Kai from the word "chai", or life. She served as Madame Director for only two years when Praetor Raziel McDolla, whom had become quite close to Natolya, named her Praetor-to-come. Two days later, the Praetor died in her sleep due to heart failure. The circumstances surrounding her death were suspicious, but with M'Kai as the new Praetor, no one was too eager to investigate.

M'Kai has three children, Asher M'Kai, Trajan M'Kai and Adira M'Kai.

Praetorship

M'Kai's Praetorship included the longest period of economic growth in Morindira's history, credited in large part to budget reforms as well as the peace dividend following the demise of the Soviet Union. After numerous reports revealed that the federal budget deficit would far greater than expected, Praetor M'Kai quickly made cutting the deficit a high priority. M'Kai submitted a budget that would cut the deficit by Rt500 billion over five years by reducing Rt255 billion of spending and raising taxes on the wealthiest 1.2% of Morindirans. It also imposed a new energy tax on all Morindirans.

M'Kai made it one of her goals as Praetor to pass trade legislation that lowered the barriers to trade with other nations. She broke with many of her supporters to support free-trade legislation. M'Kai believed that free trade would help Morindira because it would allow Morindria to boost its exports and grow the economy. M'Kai also believed that free trade could help move foreign nations to economic and political reform. That same year, M'Kai signed a landmark trade agreement with Greater Tomania. The agreement –- the result of more than a decade of negotiations -– would lower many trade barriers between the two countries, making it easier to export Morindiran products such as olives, liquors, and livestock. However, the agreement could only take effect if Tomania was accepted into the WTO and was granted permanent “normal trade relations”. Under the pact, Morindira would support Tomania’s membership in the WTO. Many Party members were relunctant to grant permanent status to Tomania because they were concerned about human rights in the country and the impact of Tomanian imports on Morindiran industries and jobs. However, in 2004 permanent normal trade relations were granted to Tomania.

In addition to the trade agreement, Morindira signed the Iron Alliance with Tomania in 2004. This historic anti-aggression pact paved the way for Morindir-Tomar relations and since Tomania has been Morindira's greatest ally.

In early 2004, M'Kai made the decision to go to war with neighboring Malialand. Tensions between Morindira and Malialand had been building since the disposition of their former king, Landar Staagen, by Praetor Raziel McDolla. M'Kai believed that Malialand's people were being oppressed by their monarchy, an that the safety of the Morindiran people was at risk. During the occupation of Malialand, Natolya was critizied for what some called "a wrong war". To this, she is famed for having said, "War does not determine who is right - only who is left."
