The Grand Duchy of Naturalog is a medium-sized nation in the region of New Folsom. It is in the UN and has submitted several proposals. It is also the current Immigration Minister for New Folsom, as well as the New Folsom Times editor.

History

Naturalog was founded by people fleeing Commonlog after it sank into the sea for reasons still under investigation. It was founded by Euler Napier, former duke of Commonlog, on the island previously known as Pi, which had its own empire at one time. Shortly after arriving in the new land, the duke had a vision from the E, a previously minor god from the Commonlog pantheon. E told the duke to create a transcendental nation, where people and E were in perfect harmony. He then left a scrap of paper with the writing, "(1+1/n)^n lim. infinity". This became the holy scripture of the Naturalogians, famous for its length and the confusion it caused. Still, the people of Naturalog try to live by it, and they believe after an infinity, the E will finally descend on earth and Naturalog will finally become transcendental.

Duke Napier left no heirs, so the intelligent ministers of his court simply brought him back to life. They continue to do this whenever the good duke dies, which is exactly every 27.18281828... years (This is not an unusual lifespan, Naturalogians normally live about this long). Because the duke forgets everything after he dies, everything that happens in Naturalog is written down, aiding historians as well as the duke.

The duke is more or less an absolute monarch, which most Naturalogians are happy with. However, in the second year of the seventh Era (the life of the duke) there was some dissidence among the people. Some felt elections should be held, and people should not have to focus their lives around bringing the E to Naturalog. They were quickly surpressed, but after several skirmishes, a compromise was made. Those in favor of elections would be sent the recently discovered island of Nameir in the Caribbean. There they could govern as they pleased. Once in the Caribbean, the leader of the anti-Es, Bernhard Riemann, received an apparent message of his own. Naturalog is not really concerned with what it was, but most believe it was an avatar of the E himself, leading the anti-Es on the path of virtue. In recent history, the previously unknown people of i have come from their underground kingdom and offered their allegiance. Naturalog now has two regions, which is why the motto is "E^(pi*i)+1=0." From Naturalogian, it translates as, "E with the power of Pi and i brings something to nothing."

Culture

Naturalog is not known for culture, but it exists. Gauss has several performance venues, including the Naturalogian Opera House, the Old Barracks (an old military camp turned into an outdoor theater), and the Ehaus. The Ehaus especially is noteworthy, as it is the only theater that has no actors. Instead, scripts and characters are assigned to patrons when they enter. After a brief time for learning as many lines as possible and getting the general gist of the story, the patrons act out the play themselves. The general public is allowed to see the plays, although to be in one requires reservation.

Art is appreciated greatly. The Euler Museum is the most famous gallery of art, and has exhibits on artists such as Huygens, Bernoulli, Mercator, Saint-Vincent, and of course, Euler. It also has a gallery of ancient art, with sculptures by Thales and Hippias and the famous fresco by Diophantus. Gauss also has the enormous Limit Auction House, where art is auctioned every Monday through Saturday.

Government

The government of Naturalog is often accused of being totalitarian. It is true that it is very involved in the lives of its citizens, but almost always in a positive way. The Good Duke (as he is often called) has a court with a minister from every corner of the Duchy to advise him. He is occasionally accused of being old-fashioned, and the fact that he is over one-thousand years old does not help. Still, most people are satisfied with a government that takes care of them. The only people to ever rebel against the system were the Nameirites, named after their leader Bernhard Nameir. They fought as guerrillas for several years for an elective system of government before Naturalog arranged a deal with them. Explorers had recently discovered an island fifteen hundred miles to the southwest of Naturalog. The government would sponsor a voyage there for the Nameirites if they promised not to return. They agreed, and founded the nation of Nameir. Recently relations between the two countries have become amiable, and both recognize the other.
