Geology

Necros-Vacuia is composed of a single, enormous island straddling the equatorial regions of the Luclan Ocean, off the west coast of the Exclusion Zone mainland. The only island nation in the Zone, its overall shape is something of a deformed crescent, dominated in the center by the shield volcano that is believed to have initially formed the island, Mt. Gorgorai, known in Vyrnnasa as Y'kannathi.

The topography of Necros-Vacuia is quite diverse. In the west, a vast basin bordered by the Belakai Mountains and Gorgorai itself has given rise to the Czernora Rainforest, the most massive center of biodiversity known in the Zone, and potentially on-planet. By contrast, however, the north arches sharply into the Necros-Vacuian highlands, terminating in the Zoryano Mountains, which extend into a small promontory known as Re Kyrain (The Diadem).

In the east, the land is much more of a steady plateau, with the exception of the Eleison Valley, and it terminates in the south with an extensive system of mangroves. Necros-Vacuia's beaches are plentiful, and in the heavily-urbanized east have been well-developed for the enjoyment both of people and tourists; they are perhaps the only reason the Commonwealth maintains a tourist market.

Necros-Vacuia is quite plentiful in mineral resources; the two most significant deposits are uranium and titanium, both of which are major components in the Necros-Vacuian wonder alloy olympinite. Other natural resources include significant deposits of iron ore, cinnabar, manganese, platinum, cobalt, promethium, crude oil, and, thanks to the network of Gorgorai's lamproite tubes, diamonds.

Hydrology

The Czernora River is the widest river known in the Exclusion Zone, and almost certainly the cleanest, though it is only the third longest. Possessing at least 25 tributaries, it crosses literally the whole of the island, originating in the Highlands near St. Ark, but possessing its mouth in the far-southwestern Ostas Prospekt, draining into the Luclan Ocean. While the Czernora itself is sediment-rich thanks to the erosion of its rainforest basin, many of the tributaries are known for sparklingly clean drinking water, especially the Mahtanes River, whose watershed provides for Eleison City itself.

In rural areas, the Czernora and its tributaries are a time-tested method of transportation, and the Commonwealth government maintains an extensive hovercraft system.

Climate

Necros-Vacuian climate is something of an oddity-- due to its positioning on the World's equator, it possesses something of a sharp climatic divide. The east is Mediterranean in nature, primarily, warm from April through September, although in Eleison and neighboring areas the clime tends more towards the subtropical.

The west of Necros-Vacuia, however, is completely tropical, without exception; this is generally why Basinai, or "junglefolk" as western Necros-Vacuians are called, are much more dark-skinned, nearer to the Hammani, than their pale Vallerai "citykin" cousins.

Ecology

Necros-Vacuian ecology is something of a mystery. Perhaps due to the long history of cohabitation with human settlers, genetic dabbling by the legendary Originators, genetic dabbling by the Predecessors, or simply the high mutative rate natural to such an isolated and diverse habitat, the island ecology seems often to need to be actively fought off by urban planners-- in Ostas Prospekt, you are more likely to be attacked by a wild shogg-akoraal than you are to ride a tame one!

The Czernora Rainforest and the river that cradles it are an endless source of floral and faunal biodiversity; indeed, several international science teams have called it "evolution in action, all day, every day." Aside from the ubiquitous shogg-akoraal, the island's dominant predator, the Lethycorax (Megalodonta thanati), is hardly an unusual sight in the western Prospekts, and the well-known Viper Monkeys, Shadowcats, and Lungsharks are hardly to be missed.
