New Stamford was originally a secessionist movement based in the Connecticut city of Stamford around 2010. Their main philosophy was to form a sensible government that was truly secular, unlike the increasingly pro-religion United States government of the time.

In 2012, the United States declared war on the European Union and its assorted allies, triggering World War III. Although the US, China, the USK (United States of Korea), Brazil, and the Southeast Asian Confederacy were on the brink of victory, the Eastern Allies developed a weapon known only as the Destroyer; no remnants of the device or any firsthand accounts of it have ever been found. All that is known is that most major cities in America were devastated. America retaliated with conventional nuclear weapons, and, in total, over 3 billion people perished.

During this age of chaos, New Stamford's small army seized Fairfield county while American armies were overseas or dead. The Capital was put in Stamford and for a short time flourished under a set of enlightened laws, but then the National Guard assaulted the city. The battle raged for three weeks, and New Stamford eventually won.

At this point, the United States had largley dissolved, as had most of the world's old governments, so there were no almost no restrictions in place when the last general, Thompson Smithee used a hydrogen bomb to destroy Stamford. Half of New Stamford's government perished, including the Mayor. Most of the army survived because they were pushing the National Guard into the New York wastelands.

When they returned from battle, the army re-built the government in the abandoned city of Westport. After that, they forled a republic that withstood the eventual collapse of the world's governments. New Stamford, unable to preserve the previous levels of technology enjoyed under American rule, decayed into a republic with technology never surpassing Napoleonic levels.

In this modern day, salvaged technology from the old America has acclerated Stamford's development to the point where mechanized tactical droids are emploied in its wars, and space exploration is starting up. New Stamford has a bright future ahead of it, and its people hope that everyone may someday flourish under its enlightened rule.
