The Nilthrian economy is an unorthodox one, due to the 100% income tax. Actually there is no such thing as income tax, nor any income at all (which for calculation purposes makes no difference). Indeed, the regular citizens own no money as such. Instead, each household is allocated a certain amount of basic foodstuffs, household items etc, in the form of credits that can be expended in any private-sector business in Nilthrias. Also, almost all education, entertainment and recreation institutions are state-funded. The resources for this are drawn from the national budget and can be seen in the above table under the categories Social Welfare, Healthcare, Education and Social Equality. A simple calculation would show that every citizen has thus access to ca $6,200 each fiscal year. This is not entirely true, as considerable sums are spent on national projects such as building new hospitals, schools, libraries, roads, attending to urban and rural infrastructure etc. Still, an average household in Nilthrias is no worse off than their, say, Turchonian or Munatanian counterparts.
The local currency (royal coin) is thus not used in everyday life. Instead, it is used in domestic affairs as a form of payment between state-owned businesses. The currency cannot be exchanged for credits, nor is it accepted by any private sector businesses. For instance, a state-owned construction company might be payed 500,000 RC for repairing a road in Fellini. This money cannot be payed as salary to the employees; it can, though, be used to buy new equipment, pay for maintenance of existing equipment, pay sub-contractors and so forth.
