History
The Niplomian Labour Party (full registered name: Niplomian New Democratic Socialist Labour Party. Shortened casual name: Labour) is a democratic-socialist party in Niploma. It is a newly formed party and has never contested a single general, or senate, election. However, it holds 38 seats in the Democratic House due to Deputie that created the party and the added Deputies who have since joined.
The party itself consists of the original breakaway group from the Official Communist Workers Party. The ten Deputies who formed the Niplomian Labour Party disagreed with the authortarian leanings of the OCWP, their unquestioned support for seperatists involved in the Southern Seperatist Movement and the OCWP support for what Labour calls outdated Marxism. Joining Labour were also 23 Deputies from the People's Coalition, most are originally from the Socialist Labour party within the People's Coalition.
For most of Niploma's history trade-unions supported the Socialist Internationalist Party although since SIP created the People's Coalition and subsequently drifted towards more central politics most trade unions placed their support in the OCWP. However, the creation of Labour - a more responsible working-class party - and support from many small trade-unions may cause the tide of financial and social support of the trade-unions to drift towards Labour.
Labour were also the first party in Niplomian politics to elect a woman as leader of the party. Cadhla Buckley, a university graduate from Srigan, a relatively poor northern city in Niploma, was elected 'Head Representative'. Before Labour she was an OCWP Deputy for ten years. In her earlier life she led socialist-leaning groups in univeristy and also served as a councillor in Srgian for 2 years as a socialist independent.
Politics
Three Key Points
Labour's first publication, 'The Common Choice for Niploma' underlined key policies. In an introduction Cadhla Buckley stated:
To reverse the damage caused by the ruling People's Coalition (and SIP prior to that) we believe that to save Niploma these three points should be implemented:
- To increase unity of citizens, especially via the increase of social welfare spending.
- To bring power to the people. A people's revolution seventy years ago still has not completed one key goal - power to the people.
- To support Niploma's Labour population without resorting to Communism.
Peformance
Due to the lack of an election it is hard to judge Labours peformance. However, with 32 Deputies the party wields powers in the Democratic House and is likely to be the closest the governing People's Coalition has to an ally. Although they control just under 5% of the Democatic House this number is likely to rise in the next election.
Locally Labour is doing excedingly well. Frequent Council elections have allowed observers to see Labours peformance. As a rule Labour appears to be winning ex-People's Coalition (PC) seats but making little or no gain in OCWP controlled councils. Traditional Socialists and social-democrats who have continually voted People's Coaliton (and prior to that, Socialist Internationalist Party) may begin to vote Labour. Since PC's shift into central politics many left-wingers will feel they, 'have no vote'. As the communists are not a 'safe' or, as seen by some, 'un-democratic and radical' vote many voters could vote Labour, some stating as much as 8% of the electorate.
However, current PM Torin called a 15th Niplomian General Election. Labour are expected to do well and current Deputies in the party have admitted they are interested in, 'joining a coalition with any party'
