The Noldor are a tribe/civilization of (Tolkien) elves.

Known for their love of knowledge and craftsmanship (especially smithcraft and jewel-making), they are most known for their production of the Silmarilli, the three jewels formed by the smith Feanor, containing the light of the Two Trees.

After the Darkening of Valinor, when Melkor and Ungoliant destroyed the Two Trees that illuminated the continent and stole the three jewels from Feanor, the Noldor left Valinor to make war on him. King1 Feanor swore an oath to reclaim the Silmarilli from any hand that held them, and he and most of the Noldor left Valinor in spite of a warning not to do so. In the process, they attacked a port city of the Teleri and stole their ships to gain passage to Middle-earth, and were therefore condemned by Mandos and banned from entering Valinor again (though this ban was lifted after the War of Wrath for most Noldor). From this point on and until the Fourth Age, most of the Noldor dwelled in Middle-earth.

1As King Finwe had been killed, Feanor was his successor as King. However, the majority of the Noldor refused to follow him and instead followed his brothers Fingolfin and Finarfin.
