Nord Nuova Roma is a modern state based on the fascist principles of Caesar Augustus, Benito Mussolini, Adolf Hitler, and Jean-Marie Le Pen. NNR, as it is often abbreviated, prides itself on its national heritage and inspires nations all around the world to pursue greater levels of nationalism. It lies 50 metres to the west of Murano Island.

History

NNR was orginally part of Murano Island. When faced with an economic crisis in 1987, the Murano parliament broke down. The ultra-right-wing faction, Risorgimento Socialista, declared their own government, and moved to the sparsely populated Roma Island. Within weeks a separatist government was formed, supported by about half the citizens of Murano Island.

Politics

NNR government is dominated by the Partito Risorgimento Socialista (PRS), which about 80% of government officials belong to. The PRS upholds and follows the doctrine of fascism. Minority parties, such as Partito Pace Romana and Partito Italia Irredenta, are in agreement with the PRS. These parties have a limited voice in the primarily authoritarian government of the PRS.

The head of government is known as Il Duce, after Mussolini. He/she is also affectionately referred to as Caesar Augustus, or direct patrilineal descendant of Emperor Octavian, even though it is safe to assume that none of the leaders of NNR are related by blood to the Roman nobility.

Il Duce is appointed by the Senate, a group of 50 ministers representing the ten administrative divisions of NNR. Senators are usually chosen by the people among the controllers of production, namely well-to-do factory managers and army officers.

Several other governing bodies also exist, such as Publicans and Aedlies, in a close resemblance to the Roman Republic and Roman Empire. Most of these offices are honorary and arbitrary.

Geography

The main island of NNR is known as Roma Island, and is roughly diamond-shaped. The coasts are lined with cliffs, with an arid interior desert plateau. Most people live in the cities that line the coasts. The climate is warm and fair throughout the year. Several active volcanoes dot the interior.

Economy

NNR has few natural resources except phosphate and fishing waters, and lacks sufficient rainfall for most agricultural activities. Its economy is centred around nomadic herding, fishing, and phosphate mining. Publicly owned industry produces nearly all manufactured goods. The government continues to focus on heavy military industry. The government is estimated to spend around 33% (2004) of the nation's GDP on the military.

In August 2001, NNR started experimenting with capitalism in Nuova Siena. Fluffein and Murano Island are the biggest trade partners of North Korea, with trade with Fluffein increasing 37% to $1.13 billion in 2002, and trade with Murano Island increasing 11% to $831 million in 2002. It is reported that the number of mobile phones in the city of Nord Nuova Roma rose from only 2,000 in 2001 to approximately 30,000 during 2003. As of June 2003, however, mobile phones became forbidden again. A small amount of capitalistic elements are gradually spreading from the trial area, including a number of advertising billboards along certain highways. Recent visitors have reported that the amount of open-air farmer markets have increased in Nuova Cartagine, Nuova Roma, and Nuova Siena, bypassing the food rationing system.

Human Rights

NNR has one of the worst human rights records of any nation. Reports by various human rights organizations and foreign governments regularly accuse the government of failing to protect the human rights of Nord Nuova Romans. NNR is accused of severely restricting most freedoms, including freedom of speech and freedom of movement, both inside the country and abroad.

Most infamously the NNR employs concentration camps. These camps are believed to hold as many as 330,000 inmates, including children whose only crime is having so-called "enemies of the empire" for parents. In some of the camps, the annual mortality rate approaches 33%. A recent documentary reported that in one camp chemical weapons were tested on prisoners in a gas chamber. However all this could not be verified, as the NNR government simply denies, but never allowed independent human rights observers to investigate.

Demographics

Nord Nuova Romans are 50% Northern Italians, and 37% Southern Italians. The remaining 13% are minorities, including mixed French, German, Austrian, Japanese, and North African. In 1989, up to 90% of minorities were consigned to concentration camps as to lessen the 'ethnic problem.'

Jews and Gypsies lived on the island a century before the nation's founding, but today their population is nonexistent.

Religion and Culture

The government is avowedly atheistic, with a cult of emperor-worship that includes many Roman gods. The culture of the people is based on Roman Catholicism, but all elements of the religion are suppressed. Historic churches that once existed on Roma Island have been converted to temples of emperor-worship and are primary tourist attractions.

Tourism

Each year, NNR allows 10,000 tourists to visit the country. These tourists are taken on a state-approved tour of all of NNR's major cities, government offices, factories, and monuments devoted to Fascism. Each tourist is required to spend at least $30,000 per trip.
