Demographics

Government and politics

The Kingdom of the Northmen is a de jure absolute monarchy, with the monarch reigning supreme, although in the last decades the Royal Council and the Royal Parliament have taken over most of the decision-making, effectively turning the nation into a de facto constitutional monarchy.

Corruption and nepotism are, as in the entire culture of the Kingdom, very common in the political circles.

Royal Parliament

The Royal Parliament is a single-chamber parliament of 300 seats. The members are elected for a six-year term by direct popular vote under a system of proportional representation. The monarch appoints the leader of the majority party as Speaker of the Parliament, a largely ceremonial position.

Royal Council

The Royal Council is a six-member executive council, which constitutes the government of the Kingdom. All members of the Royal Council are voted by the Royal Parliament for a six-year term, while the President of the Royal Council is appointed by the monarch. The monarch also has veto powers over the Royal Parliament's vote.

Each of the Royal Councillors heads a department of the government. Following latest elections, the members of the Royal Council are:

  • Alina Rein, President of the Royal Council, Department of Foreign Affairs
  • Markus Iwers, Department of Home Affairs
  • Krista Heiden, Department of Defence
  • Simeon D'Angelo, Department of Law and Justice
  • Janina Fiennes, Department of Energy, Environment, Transport and Communications
  • Charles Sherin, Department of Finance

The President of the Royal Council is, after the monarch, the highest-ranking official in the Kingdom. The President presides over Royal Council meetings and carries out representative functions. In urgent situations where a Council decision cannot be made in time, the President is empowered to act on behalf of the whole Royal Council. Apart from that, the President is a primus inter pares, having no power above and beyond the other five Royal Councillors.

Industry and economy

Energy

The majority of the nations electricity is generated through nuclear power, while coal, oil and wood (byproducts of the pulp and paper industry) are also important. The nation is relatively flat in terrain, consequently the Kingdom doesn't have much hydropower capacity. Long and dark winters considerably reduce the effectiveness of solar power, while wind turbine power plants suffer from lack of favourable locations. Nevertheless, there are a few offshore wind farms, providing about 2% of the nations electricity.
