Overview

The Loose City-State Association of Nova Britannicus is a massive, safe nation, renowned for its compulsory military service. Its hard-nosed, intelligent population have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Social Welfare, Healthcare, and Education. The average income tax rate is 55%, and even higher for the wealthy. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Automobile Manufacturing, Beef-Based Agriculture, and Cheese Exports industries.

Retirement homes are often fitted with luxurious suites, the Nova Britannicus Automotive Racing Series draws millions of spectators annually while those near the tracks complain about the noise, citizens are expected to be proficient in at least five languages (of which Nova_Britannicus_Rhyming_Slang is not one), and murderers frequently escape punishment by claiming they were protecting their honour. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Nova Britannicus's national animal is the Navy-Bluebird, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the Pound Sterling.

History

The Loose City-State Association of Nova Britannicus was originally part of the Britannic Empire along with neighbouring Starblaydia, and going back even further than that, was also conquered by the Romanics as part of their Empire.

When the Britannic Empire withdrew it's colonial grip over this part of the Region, Starblaydia formed itself into a new nation, while each of the sprawling cities to the North closed up and became independant. Originally the Northern-most Starblaydi city of Penningworth was one of these, but was soon swallowed up by the newborn nation.

Soon the cities began to realise they could not function on their own. Before long they allied themselves with each other, fighting the occasional minor battle to determine the outcome of their minor squabbles.

After years of integration, improved links and sharing of democratic ideals, the City-States formed themselves into a nation, albeit a not-very-unified one. In deference to both their previous and ancient rulers, who had dragged them kicking and screaming into the first and twentieth centuries, they named their nation Nova Britannicus. Like their neighbours, Starblaydia, they use the Imperial Golden Eagle in their flag, along with the Union Jack on a dark blue field.

The City-States

There are six city-states in N.B., generally these are huge shining Metropolises surrounded by millions of acres of wide-open plains, with nothing but farms and roads to connect them.

Beverington

The eastern-most City-State, Beverington is known for its airship manufacturers and general crazy scientist population who invent all manner of weird things. The Beverington Hawks are the city's Football team.

Foxchester

Jet Fighters and aerial power are the order of the day in Foxchester, notorious for its macho, laid-back population, who produce most of the fighter-jocks for the Britannican Air Force. Their team is the Foxchester Raiders, originally the best Football Team with the most representatives on the National Team, but soon stripped of that title by the Rovers of Tuncastle.

Hernsworth

The Hernsworth Cubs are perennially one of the worst teams in all of the Starblaydi Football League, and Hernsworth itself is generally regarded as the runt of the six Britannican city-states.

Montepool

The Montepool Waves cosmopolitan football team reflects the state of the city, being on the coastline has meant that the people of Montepool have grown up with the sea. Montepool's Navy is second-to-none in Nova Britannicus' military reckoning, providing the ships that carry the fight for N.B.

Tuncastle

The most populous of the Cities has given rise to the best-supported Britannican football team, the Tuncastle Rovers. With such a surplus of people, the infantry regiments of Tuncastle are large and unweildy. It is also home to the Nova Britannicus Football Association.

Widdrington

Home to the largest Race Track in N.B., along with the most car manufacturers, Widdrington is the ironworks of N.B.; it provides the armoured tank backbone to the Britannican forces and is famous for a big and strong population. The Widdrington Wolves football team, however, aren't such powerhouses in the Starblaydi Football League.

Politics

Taken as a whole, Nova Britannicus is a melting pot of different ideals, agendas and systems. The right to free Education and Healthcare goes arm-in-arm with a staunchly pro-business attitude. Some say that removing the policies of the left would turn the Association into a paradise for business, trade and economics. Other claim that removing the Capitalism from the agenda would produce a liberal paradise. Together, however, a strong mix of ideals teeters in the political Centre.

Suffrage

Anyone over the age of 18 is eligable to vote

Culture

A quite strong economy is led by the high-tech Car Manufacturers, who use their technical wizardry to find the perfect racing machines in the Forumla Britain class, the fastest possible racing cars that swarm around old airfields on almost any given weekend somewhere in the Association. In between the huge cities are vast tracts of farmland, grazing billions of head of cattle, with the cows producing huge amounts of milk for all the different dairy products that the Association produces. Each city is rightly proud of its own individual cheese, which each assumes to be better than its rivals. The Pound Sterling is worth a little less than a US Dollar, though with a less convoluted economic policy the currency could be a lot stronger.

Sport

Football

Nova Britannicus teams have a strong tradition of competitiveness between each other and their inclusion in the Starblaydi Football League has only added to the atmosphere then the teams meet. The tag of 'best team in Nova Britannicus' tends to be somewhat of a jinx these days, as Foxchester and Tuncastle's teams acquired and lost the tag with equal ease. Current 'best team' are the Montepool Waves, who became the first Britannican team to win Liga Starblaydia.

The National Football Team

With only six teams in the country, Nova Britannicus' pool of players tends not to be the largest in the world.

With neighbours Starblaydia making it to World Cup 17, Nova Britannicus took their steps into international fame four years later. Jean-Paul Georges-Ringeaux, kicked out of the Starblaydi Managerial position after failing to qualify for World Cup 16, took Nova Britannicus through their first Qualifiers for World Cup 18. They then Qualified at their second attempt and made it to the next two finals, though missing out on World Cup 22 proved to be no bad thing...

World Cup Honours
World Cup 19 through 21, 23 through 25: Finals reached

Nova Britannicus' AOCAF career has never been particularly good, though the second-string of players that they have sent to AOCAFs 3 through 9 has never been particularly good either.

AOCAF Honours
None

Though having entered only two Cups of Harmony (for World Cups 18 and 22), Nova Britannicus actually won one of them, becoming Cup of Harmony Champions and taking their first and only international trophy. For more information see Powers' Army.

CoH14: Winners

Nova Britannicus entered the Baptism of Fire for World Cup 18 in good spirits, though they marginally failed to make it to the final due to a penalty shoot-out over Smoking Pits in the Semi-Final. They did, however, win the Third-Placed Playoff against Castillanos.
