Background

Nova Hope’s recent history has been one of political isolation. Left to its own vices Nova Hope has created a free nation based on personal accountability and an efficient, while socially responsible, government system. Previously Nova Hope had been a colony of a much larger monarchal pan-Pacific empire, which doesn’t exist today as it splintered into many small principalities and one larger nation. Nova Hope was the predominant principality and began organizing the other principalities into, what was then, a confederal system. A slow transition took place with more emphasis being placed on the federal level and the amalgamation slowly turned into a federal system with a strong authority within its own jurisdictions. Now a pseudo presidential system with parliamentary checks Nova Hope is becoming more active in the NationStates world.

Geography

===Location=== A large Island chain in the Pacific referred to as The Directorate Nova Hope occupies the largest Island in the chain and several small satellites.

Area

====Total==== 73,647,248.5 sq km (Omitting colonial maratime claims)

====Comparative area==== about the size of Australia, though slightly larger, counting maritime claims. Colonial claims on the Manium continent are inconceivably large.

Borders

  • Coastal border: 32 650 km
  • Land Border: 38 695 km
  • Border country:
    • Transnapastain: 3,432km
    • Nailiak: 2,888km
    • McClellen: 11,375km
    • Hamptonshire: 7,700km
    • Vastiva: 4,550km
    • Nycton: 2,275km
    • South Augustin: 5,775km
    • RomeW: 700km

Maritime Claims

All water between it and its satellite islands to the East and twenty nautical miles beyond that land. Also reserves the right to make claims further than that, into the sea lanes that are frequented by those who use the Panama Canal.

Claims are also made on the water directly offshore its holdings in Manium. The ‘Inland River Canal’, also on Manium, is partially claimed; though it maintains its right to claim the entirety of the river.

Climate

Tropical. It has frequent balmy nights and many tropical depressions in area. While the continent of Manium holds a full variety of climates and ecosystems.

Terrain

Has one large mountain range running through its west side. It runs from north to south making a gradual ninety degree turn to the east running into the ocean. This creates a rain trapping effect in the NE of the country and a lush jungle is pervasive. The entire southern part of the nation, separated by the mountain range, is a barren coastal desert with sparse oasis.

The Manium holdings are predominantly plains; though a plentiful marshland and forest can be found west of the rolling hills that run through the centre of it. The north east of the colony sports a great forest and large cliff face.

Highest point: Yakamota Mountain 5.2km Lowest point: Freeform Inc. stripped mine area 900m below sea level

Natural Resources: Are very varied and plentiful but with the large private sector very little is exported raw, most of it is processed domestically.

arable land: 1.06% permanent crops: 0.03% (.025 of it is non edible crops) other: 98.93%

Natural Hazards: Tropical depressions, Tornados, monsoons, occasional floods, severe drought (southern regions only)

Current environmental issues: industrial development, urbanization, The human population consumes more food than the country is able to produce, heavy oil development offshore as well as in the southern desert, the urban centres have expanded to the edge of the jungle and now any increase in the area of living space for the population results in the clear cutting of an endangered jungle. This aside large quantities of jungle are being cleared for cattle grazing regardless of urban development.

Legislative branches

Nova Hope has both a congress, designed after the American system. And a house of commons, lead by a prime minister, tailored from the English system
For a motion to pass in the government two of the three bodies need to approve it. If the PM, speaking for the House of Commons, and President are in agreement then congress need never see the bill. If they cannot agrees congress breaks the tie. A piece of legislation can be introduced by any of the three branches of government.
