Nwoh became independent in 2006, after more than a century as a German colony. Nwoh was one of the few German colonies not forfeited after both the world wars, and it has seen a fusion of a very select few nationalities resulting in a unique culture. Although old divisions linger, Nwohan nationalism is on the rise with disparate ethnicities feeling a oneness that transcends race and religion.

History

The Period of Precolonization

Approximately 1800 years ago, a small band of Kaskaskia Indians migrated to the island of Nwoh. They created a village on Nwoh's northern shore. Because the Kaskaskian migrants were so few in number, new traits managed to develop where they would otherwise have not. For instance, different from any mainland Kaskaskia, Nwohan Kaskaskia had blonde hair and blue eyes. The Kaskaskia lived on the island of Nwoh for a thousand years without problems, but then came the Ottawa. The Ottawa eventually made that same trek and landed on Nwoh's northwestern shore. The Nwohan Kaskaskia's small genetic pool of traits contributed toward a weakening in their physical bodies, and the tribe was massacred. The Ottawa rebuilt the Kaskaskian village and remained on Nwoh. Evolution smiled kindly on the Ottawa, and, with the help of five later waves of Ottawan immigrants from the mainland, the Ottawa gene pool held strong. Modern historians now believe that some mixed breeding occurred between the Ottawa and Kaskaskia before the latter were exterminated due to reports from the first German settlers that some of the Ottawa they first discovered had blonde hair (although the allele for blue eyes had been weeded out).

The Period of Colonization

In 1774, three sons of the leader of a small Islamic sultanate (whose name has been lost in time) sailed to the island of Nwoh. The Ottawa revered them as gods and commanded the three brothers to be their leaders; however, the two eldest sons died almost immediately due to disease, so the only youngest remained. He declared himself the sultan, a title which still exists on Nwoh today. In 1900, Germany financed a ship to sail through 000. Commanded by Admiral Matthäus Eberlin, the ship landed ashore Nwoh. The Germans began a period of rapid colonization, pushing the Ottawa to the western shore. Ethnic tensions flared, and the Ottawa rose up in 1901; however, the Germans, replenished thanks to the mother country, quashed their rebellion. During the first world war, the Ottawa succeeded in wresting Nwoh from German control (unsubstantiated rumors claim this was done with British support), but their reign was short-lived. The Germans regained control in 1921 and would stay in power for another twenty-two years. Then, lightning struck twice. In 1943, with Germany ferociously involved in the war in Europe, the Ottawa rose up again, gaining control. A decade later, the "native" Germans fought back and reclaimed all of Nwoh except the western shore.

The Period of Independence Nwoh became independent in 2006. In 1994, the UN demanded Germany to give Nwoh its independence; however, the independence movement was slow due to differences between the Ottawa Tribe in the west and the Germans in the east. After a protracted debate, the two sides met in Helsinki with Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen. Miraculously, the two sides agreed to form a harmonious alliance and unite under one nation insofar as that government did not take too much power. The Germans allowed the leader of the Ottawa Tribe, Sultan Tebeau, to be a ceremonial sultan. While still possessing some power, the greater control lies in the Congress, whose members are popularly elected. With both sides greatly pleased by the result of the conference, the Finnish leader's daughter, Annastiina, was wed to the sultan to seal the arrangement. Since then, civil war in Sri Lanka has led to a wave of Sinhala refugees. Also, the newly improved relations with Finland have correlated with a sizable wave of Finnish migrants.

Geography

Nwoh is located to the north-northeast of the People's Republic of Pastofaria and to the west of the Holy Empire of 5yph3r. There are several currently uncolonized islands surrounding Nwoh, and there is a massive landmass to the north. The surrounding ocean regularly sees warm water temperatures and is comparatively clean.

Nwoh's highest point is a volcano, which the native Kaskaskians named Mt. Pyranha (the "y" is a front, rounded vowel, akin to the German "ü"). The volcano has not erupted in over 500 years, and it is assumed that it has become eternally dormant. Mt. Pyranha rests just outside the city of Neu Konstanz.

The capital, Frühlingfeld, is located on the southern shore at the mouth of Nwoh's only river: The Flüsschen River. A massive environmental effort is underway in an attempt to purify the river from years of overpollution.

Political Subdivisions

Nwoh is divided into 11 cantons-they are listed below in counterclockwise order (cantonic capitals stated afterward):

 1. Narragansett Narraga (central, no shoreline)
 2. Annastiina Uusi-Helsinki (north-central)
 3. Cylon Srina (northwest)
 4. Arapaho Ohapa (west, northern)
 5. Naskapi Akspa (west, southern)
 6. Ojibwa Bwija (southwest)
 7. Agrabah Beneträume (south-central)
 8. Neu Schleswig Jutlas (southeast)
 9. Baltica Schwertwal (east, southern)
 10. Bodenland Kaiserheim (east, northern)
 11. Neu Württemberg Hohengart (northeast)

1,4,5,6 have Ottawan majorities; 8,9,10,11 have German majority; 2 has a Finnish majority; 3 has a Sri Lankan majority; 7 is the canton surrounding the capital (Frühlingfeld).

Economy

The Sultanate of Nwoh's economy has been rising since independence; however, recent events have triggered an economic slowdown and even, much to Nwoh's dismay, an economic reversal when the UN changed Nwoh's economic status from 'Very Strong' to 'Strong' and, later, even to 'Good' (for one brief period, Nwoh was even so low as to be categorized as merely 'Reasonable'); however, Nwoh is on its way toward achieving financial success. The country is self-sufficient in food production, with Nwohan staples being bananas, pineapples, alligator, and antelope. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Information Technology, Retail, and Woodchip Exports industries. The high educational level of the labor force has led to low unemployment and has made Nwoh completely independent from foreign aid.

Recently, Nwoh has begun to tap into its oil. Although production is limited, approximately 10,000 barrels are produced daily. Nwoh firmly supports its oil industry and is hoping that it will bring Nwoh far greater economic success.

The most highly funded industries are:

 1. Law and Order
 2. Education
 3. Healthcare

Nwoh's currency is the Nakhba [NAKH]. More in-depth economic statistics are available at the regularly updated: http://www.geocities.com/ohiodreier/Nwohst

Government

Nwoh is divided into three branches: Executive, Legislative, and Judicial. The three branches are in a system of equal codominance. Nwoh's voting age is 18.

Executive Nwoh's real executive authority lies in its president (currently: President Wilhelm Genz), although some power is held by the vice president (currently: Vice President Angela Döppman) and by the sultan (currently: Sultan Atahualpa Tebeau). Order of succession for the sultan follows Salic Law. Elections for president were last held on the 22nd of November, 2006, and they will occur again in 2010. Candidates for vice president are hand selected by the presidential candidate as a running mate. President Genz will be eligible to run for reelection. If he were to win, he would be eligible for one last term before term-limits set in. Nwoh allows presidents to hold power for ten years; however, that does not coincide with elections. In the event that the people popularly elect a president for a third term, he serves the first two years before passing the position to his vice president.

Legislative Nwoh's legislative branch is a single 33 member house, known simply as the Congress. Each of Nwoh's 11 cantons has three representatives: Two are popularly elected, but the third is appointed by the president. Elections are held simultaneous to presidential elections with no term limits. Laws passed by a simple majority in the Congress can only be overturned by a later Congressional vote or by a joint declaration by the president, vice president, and sultan that the bill is to be vetoed (this is one of two of the sultan's only real governmental powers).

Judicial Nwoh's judicial branch is compiled of a Supreme Court, which serves both as an appellate court and as one of the reviewers of gubernatorial decisions (see: 'Local' section below), and one Canton Court per canton (11 in total). Only approximately 150 cases are reviewed by the Supreme Court per year. The Supreme Court is composed of 7 justices. Of these, two are appointed by the president, two by Congress, two by the sultan (his other governmental power), and one by popular vote. They decide the cases in their court. Simultaneous with the presidential election, these appointments can, but do not need to, change every four years.

The judges of the Canton Courts are appointed for life by the Supreme Court. In Canton Courts, trials are decided by juries (whose members come from the local population, i.e. jury duty). Nwoh believes a defendant is innocent until proven guilty. Having an attorney is strongly encouraged for all cases. If a defendant's financial situation prevents him from hiring an attorney, the court will appoint a public defender.

Local Each canton popularly elects a governor. These elections are also simultaneous with the others. Governors possess much authority over their individual canton; however, any of their actions can be overturned if four of the five following people/bodies declare their actions to be inappropriate:

 1. President
 2. Vice President
 3. Sultan
 4. Congressional simple majority
 5. Supreme Court

Political Parties

To date, Nwoh's divisions between Nwoh's political parties are both ethnic and ideological. While there are over one hundred political parties, the following are represented in Congress (number of congressional members belonging to each party is stated in parentheses):

 1. DFU-Deutsche Familie Union (8)-German Communitarian
 2. BGG-Bimesemagak Giigoonh (7)-Ottawan Libertarian
 3. IKM-Ikwewag Mewinzha (4)-Ottawan Conservative
 4. DLP-Deutsche Linkspartei (4)-German Liberal
 5. OMV-Omniverde (4)-Panethnic Green Liberal
 6. KKK-Kansallinen Kokoomus (2)-Finnish Conservative
 7. JHU-Jathika Hela Uramaya (2)-Sri Lankan Fascist
 8. MJP-Mahajana Pakshaya (1)-Sri Lankan Socialism
 9. SSP-Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (1)-Finnish Socialist

These parties are currently aligned in the following way (although this is fluid and votes rarely fall along partisan lines):

 1. Right (DFU, BGG, KKK, JHU)-19
 2. Left (IKM, DLP, OMV, MJP, SSP)-14

The president and vice president are members of the DFU, while the sultan supports the BGG.

People

Nwoh's average life expectancy is 77 years, and the literacy rate is 98%. On average, the ethnicity with the longest life span is the Finns at 89, followed by the Germans at 84, the Ottawans at 72, and lastly the Sri Lankans at 64. Literacy is 100% for the Finns and the Germans, 98% for the Sri Lankans, and 95% for the Ottawans.

Religions

 1. Ottawan...35%
 2. Catholic...24%
 3. Lutheran...21%
 4. Therevada Buddhist...20%

The Ottawan religion is practiced almost exclusively by Nwoh's Ottawan population. The Catholic religion is practiced almost exclusively by Nwoh's southern German population (typically those of Baden-Württemberg descent). The Lutheran religion is practiced by Nwoh's new Finnish population and also the northern German population (typically those of Schleswig-Holstein descent). The Therevada Buddhist religion is practiced by Nwoh's Sri Lankan population. This is also the fastest growing religion in Nwoh, gaining many members in both the German and Ottawan populations.

Languages

 1. German...48%
 2. Ottawan...38%
 3. Sinhala...9%
 4. Finnish...4%
 5. Other...1%

German is Nwoh's only official language, a fact which vehemently angers a large portion of the non-German population. Finnish is only spoken in ethnic Finnish communities, and sociologists believe that the next generation of Finns will drop Finnish as their mother language. Ottawan is the only language the sultan speaks, a matter angering the German population. Sinhala is a quickly growing language as more and more Nwohans are attracted to the Therevada Buddhist religion.

Military

Nwoh is a firm believer in neutrality, so much so that zero percent of Nwoh's budget goes into defense. Obviously, this has caused great worry over Nwoh's vulnerability to a foreign takeover; however, only three of the major political parties support the creation of a military. In case of an attack, Nwoh will rely on the support of its allies, to whom Nwoh frequently sells weapons. To date, no foreign nations have attacked an independent Nwoh, and none are foreseen in the future.

The November Election

For the first time as an independent nation, the Sultanate of Nwoh held elections on November 22, 2006. The biggest winner turned out to be the DFU with the BGG a close second. Dissatisfied by the Germans seeming victory, there is a large movement now among the Ottawan population to unite the two major Ottawan parties: the BGG and the IKM. This, however, is vehemently opposed by the party leaders who cite irreconcilable differences. The two bottom-finishing socialist parties, the MJP/SSP, have recently concluded talks to unite under one panethnic socialist party: the Monomni Party (MNP), which will appear in all future elections in place of the two parties.

Executive

 1. Wilhelm Genz/Angela Döppman: DFU...33%
 2. John Ojibwa/Kaskas Pontiac: BGG...28%
 3. Isolde Wild/Heinz Schäffer: DLP...14%
 4. Mary Lutayan/Jane Saffron: IKM...9%
 5. Ralph Stiinson/Nader Telugu: OMV...9%
 6. Pali Elfrine/Tipitaka Treening: JHU...3%
 7. Hrothgar Finnson/Wiglaf Freia: KKK...2%
 8. Srimin Hefrin/Podnik Tayrig: MJP...1%
 9. Gustav Olafson/Friederik Ollensberg: SSP...1%

Legislative See 'Political Parties' section for number of seats each party won for Congress.

Judicial Candidates are required not to run as a member of a political party; however, the current makeup of the court is roughly:

 1. DFU...3 (2 by president, 1 by Congress)
 2. BGG...2 (by sultan)
 3. JHU...1 (by Congress)
 4. OMV...1 (elected by popular vote)

Daughter Nations

Shortly after the German President Wilhelm Genz won Nwoh's first election, five million disgruntled Nwohan Ottawans abandoned the country, claiming they were shortchanged in the independence process. They abandoned the region, going to the northern mainland. There, in what is now the Ojibwa Region, they formed a nation: The Colony of Ottanwoh. Politically, Ottanwoh is significantly more libertarian than its mother nation, and the people seem to want as small a government as possible.

To counter the new colony, five million Nazi Germans followed after the Ottawa. They settled beside Ottanwoh and are now known as the Nomadic Peoples of Warring Nwoh. It appears as though they will not attack Ottanwoh and are content with a cold war of economics...at least for now. Warring Nwoh is significantly more authoritarian than its mother country, reflecting the Nazi tendencies of its founders.

Delegacy

Nwoh's first role as UN delegate was short-lived. Nwoh successfully coup d'etated Brunelian BG Advocates in 0000000000000. Unfortunately, the region's founder, the Colony of 0000000000000 is a puppet of the overthrown delegate. Enraged, the founder banned Nwoh from the region.

To spite 0000000000000, Nwoh then took command of 00000000000000000000000, a sister region. Nwoh did not remain in that pathetic region for long before moving on to 000. After a brief period of mobility, Nwoh fell into oblivion early in the year 2007. It would be many months before Nwoh was revived. Scientists the world over are desperately trying to find out what happened to Nwoh during that time period. It appears, something went awry with time itself. Regardless, Nwoh is now content to recovering its wounds in the powerful and safe region of the Axis of Absurdity.
