Overview
Nyalia is an Innofensive Centrist Democracy located on the equator of the African continent.
The Democratic Equatorial Empire of Nyalia is a massive, socially progressive nation, notable for its barren, inhospitable landscape. Its hard-nosed population of 1.126 billion have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.
It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Education, Healthcare, and Social Equality. The average income tax rate is 84%, and even higher for the wealthy. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Information Technology industry, followed by Pizza Delivery and Retail.
It is illegal for police officers to carry out searches due to strict privacy laws, the government has cut its subsidies for all special interest groups, the arms industry is strictly regulated, and tombstones are ten feet high to accommodate the names of inhabitants. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Nyalia's national animal is the Fainting Goat, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its currency is the Rupees.
History
Nyalia was created in 1956 when Nyal Varrus (who later became Sultan Nyal) bought vast amounts of equatorial land from the governments of Somalia and Kenya. He turned this land into the new state of Nyalia, and placed himself as it's ruler. At this time the nation was known as the Sultanate of Nyalia. The nation flourished economically under his rule, however political freedoms and civil rights suffered.
Nyalia became a member of the newly founded Equatorial Alliance in 2007 and also joined the United Nations.
In early 2007, Sultan Nyal Varrus Sr. succumbed to lung cancer, probably brought on by his heavy smoking. Due to this he was no longer able to rule over Nyalia, so rule was handed over to his son Prince Nyal Varrus jr. When it became apparent that the sultan would not recover from his illness Prince Nyal was given principality over Nyalia which became known as The Principality of Nyalia.
On the 7rd of April 2007 Sultan Nyal died of lung cancer and full rule was given to his son Nyal Varrus jr. Prince Nyal immediately renamed the nation The Empire of Nyalia and put himself as Emperor. Since Nyal Varrus jr. became Emperor, Nyalia has seen an increase in civil rights and also in political freedoms with the introduction of free and fair elections on the 21th of May 2007, which had been formerly banned under the rule of the Sultan. A week of celebrations was held in honour of this turning point in Nyalia's government and a public holiday from the 21th of May until the 25th of May was created.
On the 14th of August 2007 the word democratic was added to the official name of Nyalia to add to the recognition celebrate the introduction of free and fair elections earlier in 2007. Nyalia is know officially known as The Democratic Empire of Nyalia.
