The Grand Duchy of Nykobing-Mors was founded in the year 178 A.F. by Valdemar, its first sovereign, who united all the Wendish-speaking peoples of the Klarfens and Schnittingbol valleys.
The current year is 1644 A.F. "A.F." stands for "After Faerie" and indicates the widely-held belief of Nykobing-Morsians that the year "1 A.F." was the first year in which no one reported any sightings of Faeries.
Christianity of a particularly tolerant, quasi-Anglican type is the religion of 88% of the population. There is a state church, The Church of Mors, headed by an Archbishop, the Archbishop of Skundersbro. Because of the very high Christology of the Church of Mors, the "A.D." reckoning is used in Nykobing Mors very little -- most members of the Church reckon that all years from the beginning of the universe have been years of the Lord.
Skundersbro, the seat of the archbishop, is also Nykobing-Mors' largest city, with a population of 436,122 at the last census (A.F. 1639). The capital, Schluppingsby-on-Klarfenso, is beautifully set where the Klarfens River flows into the 26-square-kilometer Klarfenso ("Lake Klarfens"). In spite of Schluppingsby being the second-largest city (pop.: 197,333), it is very laid back, and only the Castle of the Four Dragons, the Grand Duke's official residence, contains any buildings of more than four stories.
The current Grand Duke, Valdemar XIXth, is 40 years old, married to Grand Duchess Viviana (born A.F. 1610) and has three children: The Duchess Emily (age 9), the Duke Robert (age 8) and the Duchess Fiona (age 2).
The Grand Duke is very proud of his most recent modernization project, the 184-km long Schluppingsby-to-Skundersbro electric railway. The fastest trains link the two cities in only 1 hour and 49 minutes.
So far as anyone knows, Nykobing Mors is the only nation state to have the West Highland Terrier as its national animal.
