Historians pinpoint The Great Backlash back to a single event, when Skapetla (b. 1894-d.1925), a prominent general and war hero, was surprisingly not chosen as a replacement for Bucklers (b.1832-d. 1902), a prominent member of The Chosen Monarchs. Skapetla took this very hard, so hard in fact, that he decided to revolt against The Chosen Monarchs and crown himself king. The troop that he lead was infamous for it’s ruthlessness, the possibility of a total conversion of the government was very real. Starting in 1918 The Skapetla Revolution ravaged the land, the Ortheronion version of The Civil War, it pitted brother against brother. The general chaos around them caused the populace to begin to wonder about what path they were being lead down, about what the government was doing to them.

Discovery and Founding of Ortheros

Before Cerebrista however, there was Ortheros. Ortheros was an often war-torn country that was constantly both feared for their psychotic nature, and admired for frequently brilliant strategies and the fierce spirit of the warriors.

Ortheros was founded by Sir Orthos IV (b. 1721-d.1786), an affluent knight from Comadica, a short lived country in the grand scheme of things; it only lasted fourteen generation before a violent revolution which left the society and economy in ruins. Sir Orthos was under the rule of Comadica’s ninth king, King Roberts II, who had an obsession to create colonies all over the world much like it saw other rival countries doing. Sending out his best knights he without fail, utterly failed to find a thing. With Orthos however Roberts II had struck paydirt. Orthos sailed into the Sea of Serenity on April 5, 1754. For some unknown reason instead of landing on a closer territory, he decided to float through the river that fees Lake Chimera, now known as The River Serendipity.

By the diaries of Orthos we know that within a week he was greeted by the Shi ’mear known to Orthus as the Chimera. The Chimera were a benevolent, pasifistic race who took little time to teach Orthos and his party tips on how to survive in the land they called simply “The Shared Land”. Orthos realized that to survive he needed to keep up a pretense of compassion and naiveté. In three years however Orthos had settled a firm community and decided that The Chimera had concluded their usefulness and waged a full scale war on them. In 1761 Orthos officially cut his ties with King Roberts II and Comadica itself. Orthos named his new country “Orthoser” which means roughly “Property of Orthos” in his native language, which later was known as Ortheronion. Somewhere in-between 1798-1820 “Orthoser” was officially changed to “Ortheros” it is not know why, and no documents discussing the name change have yet been found. Orthos died in with a will that doubled as a set of new decrees and regulations. The most bizarre of the new statute was the fact that a period of peace was not allowed for more than a decade, a law that has lead many historians to believe that he was paranoid and delusional in his final days. His son, Orthos V (b. 1760-d.1803), agreed with all the odd decrees, which has lead other historians to believe that paranoia and delusions ran in the family. This was the start of several pointless wars that would become Ortheros’s trademark.

After Orthos, Before Cerebrus

After Orthos V died he was succeeded by his son Darneedl (b. 1777-d.1840) who was noted by his seeming reluctance to follow the laws, the wars under him were more like schoolyard fights. It seems like he tried to follow Orthos’s Will with as little bloodshed as possible. Some believe Darneedl was poisoned by his more militant son Chaocas I (b. 1796- d.1854), despite the fact that Darneedl was very old by their standards by the time he died. Chaocas was responsible for the great Chimera wipeout, a “war” with all people who had Chimera decent. Of course no person of more than 50% of Chimera heritage had survived by that time, but Chaocas declared the war anyway. Records show that the project was a complete failure, it only lasted from 1850-1851, however over three-hundred people were executed. Chaocas II (b. 1819-d. 1856) did an incredible amount of damage in his two years of rule. He started “The Perennial War” so called because in the six months that it spanned, it killed 230,000 people, which equals casualties of 1,277 people a day. After the war Chaocas declared himself “victorious” and changed the name of the capital (long named “Orthos City”) to Chaocas.

Chaocas left no heir, which lead to “The Chosen Monarchs”, a group of former generals who formed a council every bit as deadly as the actual monarchy. The Chosen Monarchs had six members at a time, over time they have been home to seventeen members overall. The Chosen Monarchs soon came to the decision to not only to keep the war cycle going, but to keep the illusion that war was going on during peacetime, citizens were constantly bombarded with images of war and death, they were taught to distrust foreigners, neighbors, even family members.

Prelude to The Great Backlash
