Oliverrian Rules Gridiron is different from other forms of Football. For example, it is played in metres instead of yards, so that it corresponds to the official unit system. Let's now see what are the rules:

Field

  • 100 metres long
  • 10 metres end-zones
  • Field Goal Posts on the front of the end zone
  • 50 metres wide

Players

  • 12 players will be used by each team

Number of downs

  • There will be 4 downs to advance 10 metres.

Scrimmage

  • The offensive and defensive lines must be 25 cm away from the centre of the ball, which creates a 50 cm separation between both teams.

Punt Return

  • There is a 2 metres immunity zone from the location the catcher catches it. If he gets tackled in that zone, he gains 5 metres and starts with a 1st and 5. Players can call a fair catch.

Motion at the snap

  • Any player, except the quarterback and the linesmen, may be in motion at anytime

Time rules

  • The play must start within 30 seconds after the referee started the clock.
  • Each team may use up to 3 timeouts per half.
  • Rules change in the last 2 minutes of the game. After each play, the clock is stopped, except for a 4th down, where the clock is not stopped.
  • The game must be ended on a play. This play has to be a "run or pass" play, which means that it must not be punted and a team must try to gain yards. Failure to comply with the rules (which will be at the referee's discretion, but a gain in yards is automatically considered as complying with rules) will end in the opposite team gaining possession of the ball. The only exception to that rule is the Field Goal, which may only be attempted with 25 metres of the endzone.

Kicker advancing the ball

  • Any player behind the kicker, and the kicker himself, may recover the ball when the ball gets kicked and if it has gone atleast 10 metres downfield.
  • On a scrimmage kick, any eligible player (any player behind the kicker) may recover directly the ball. Any team gaining possession of the ball gets automatically a 1st and 10.
  • If the scrimmage kick is blocked and recovered by the kicking team, this team may choose to
    • 1) attempt another kick
    • 2) try to advance the ball on a 1st and 10

Fumbles out of bounds

    • The last team to touch the ball gets the possession of it on a
    • 1) 1st and 10 if it's a turn-over
    • 2) next play and the remaining to complete if it's recovered by the possessing team

Field Goals and singles

  • Any kick that goes into the end zone is a live ball, except when the field goal is good.
  • Any player may try to return the ball.
  • If the player fails to return the ball, or if the ball was kicked through the end zone, the kicking team scores a rouge (one point) and the receiving team gets to kick from its own 25 metres line.

Safeties

  • A safety is awarded 2 points to the defending team. The offensive team then kicks the ball from the 25 metres line.

Points after touchdown

  • A touchdown is awarded 6 points.
  • Any team may attempt a play for additional points. The number of points awarded depends on the play:
    • 1) 1 point for a field goal
    • 2) 2 points for any other play
  • Point-after-touchdowns are tried from the 5 metres line
  • The ball is considered live on any play. Defensive teams can score from interceptions, fumbles, etc.
