One Red Dot, formally known as The Interdependent Territories of One Red Dot (Japanese: 一つ赤い点の相互依存の領域; Romanji: Hitotsu Akai Ten no Sougoizon no Ryōiki; Chinese: 一红点相互依赖国; Pinyin: Yìhóngdiăn Xiānghù-yīlàiguó; Nejid: Si Kahi'd Diad zon Siaagu Yirez Gok) was a relatively small island nation in the South China Sea. Real-time geographically, it was located next to Taiwan, east of the Taiwanese county of Hualian, and west of the Ryukyu Islands. However, based in NationStates, the nation was part of the United Powers region. The nation shared its eastern borders with Giant Zucchini.

The archipalego was inhabited by Gweridijongyans, the indigenous people. During the 1800s, the main island was claimed by the English. The island was ceded to the Japanese for much of the early 20th century before being returned to the English. During the late 20th century, there was much struggle with independence before being finally achieving it as an entire entity in 2003.

The people led relatively peaceful lives and the nation was very much neutral in many international affais. However, the government had been been struggling with the country's economy ever since the union of its former three parts, thus making it quite weak, and usually always in need of foreign aid.

One Red Dot was presently a member of United Powers (joined in 8 March 2003), UN (joined in 5 March 2003), EWCC (joined in December 2003 - previously WCC) and the NSTA (founding member since December 2004).

History

Early History

Lying between Taiwan and the Ryukyu Islands of Japan, it was recorded that people migrated from both sides of the archipelago at least 4000 years ago, mainly to the largest island. The people were (and still are) known as Gweridijongians. They had their dialects, the most popular being Nejid - which sounds like a mix of today's Japanese, Chinese and various Polynesian languages. The main island was known by the locals as Gweridijongya. However, history has records of the island archipalego by other nations of the times. The main island and the surrounding smaller islands were known to the Chinese as Liong-wan Dou (Chinese: 冷湾岛; Pinyin: Lěngwān Dăo), and to the Japanese as Wanrei-Tō (湾冷島). The English also knew of the island, but only its prominent peak was noted in records as Mt. Dorona. Due to the large amount of shoreline, the people generally led simple lives as fishermen.

English Dominance (1785-1921)

The gradual colonialisation of Asia by European powers changed Gweridijongya. English explorers, led by Sir David Rangoon-Sentar, stumbled onto the largest island in 1785. Settlement was generally in the south-western area and named their settlement Dorona, after the central mountain. Relations between the new English settlers and the natives were easy at first, but it soon broke down. The mountain thus served as a natural barrier between the English and the natives. In the next few decades, the new settlers expanded from their original port town. By the 1850s, almost three-quaters of the island was forcefully acquired for settlement.

At this point, present-day One Red Dot was now in three distinct parts: Dorona which consisted 75% of the main island, Gweridijongya which consisted the remaining 25% of the island, and the remaining islands of Liong-wan Dou, which had been later claimed by the Chinese.

Modern Asian Influence (1921-1971)

After 136 years of rule, in 1921, England lost the Nippon-Anglo War and Dorona was ceded to the Japanese, which was to be returned 50 years later in 1971 in accordance with the Treaty of Baneberra. The Japanese renamed the land Minatomachi (港町; lit.: port town). They established their way of life with much success. Minatomachi was not adversely affected by the effects of World War 2, due to it being owned by the Japanese.

Meanwhile, Gweridijongya had become quite prosperous, becoming allies of the Japanese. Also, further on in 1951, Liong-wan Dou had been renamed Shusan Islands.

Campaign for Independence (1971-1987)

In 1971, Japan returned Dorona to the English. However, the people had become frustrated in being passed around, and so demanded independence from the English. English refusal caused a major breakdown between both sides and constant rioting caused the still-colony nation to enter an economic slump.

Mergers (1987-2006)

In February 1987, England relented but only if Dorona were to become a self-governing state of the still prosperous Gweridijongya. The people agreed in a referendum and on 15 February 1987, the two nations formed the new nation of Gweridijong and Dorona.

Due to many reasons and factors, including the 1997 Asian Currency Crisis, Gweridijong and Dorona merged as a single nation on 4 March 2003 with the Shusan Islands. The name One Red Dot was used, due to it being the popularly misheard old Japanese name of the islands by the then English settlers. The Japanese flag was adopted in honour of giving the people the inspiration and strength that led to independence.

The land's population has been steadily growing. In NationStates time, the population reached 4 billion citizens on 13 January 2005, 5 billion on 1 July 2005, 6 billion on 19 December 2005, and 7 billion on 1 July 2006.

The Fall of a Young Nation

However, as the government struggled to maintain the new nation, so did its economy continue to fall. It was soon clear that such a nation could not continue to exist successfully. On 28 November 2006, the nation of One Red Dot finally ceased to exist.

Politics

The Interdependent Territories of One Red Dot was a federal republic and had a parliamentary system of government.

States and Territories

One Red Dot consisted of 12 Interdependent (ID) territories and 1 territory. The ID-territories were Burrington, Chisai'nihon, Dorona, Foreston, Gweridijongya, Hawklands, North Lakes, Rangoon, Santiga, Shusan Archipalego, Westshores, Yaanderub. Dottian Capital Territory was the sole territory.

Each ID-territory had their government known as an Idgov. Each Idgov held power over all workings of their ID-territory, including health, internal security, infrastructure, etc. The head of government of each ID-territory was known as a mayor. The Natgov was the national government. It directly governed the DCT, and could override legislature in all ID-territories. The head of the Natgov was the Chief Minister himself.

Elections of the 105-member Parliament was elected by popular vote for a 4 year term.

People of particular note were, YEE Hung-Dian, the National Ambassador of the Region, and Paul BARRIA, the Representative of One Red Dot to the United Nations.
