The Order of the Maple Leaves is Kelssek's highest civillian honour. Created in 1967, the Order was established to recognize the lifetime contributions made by Kelssekians who made a major difference to Kelssek or the world, as well as efforts made by non-Kelssekians who have "made the world better by their actions". The serving President of Kelssek is the Sovereign of the order, as well as its Chancellor and Principal Companion.

There are four grades of award; from lowest to highest; Member, Officer, Companion, and Knight-Companion. The postnominals for the awards are MML, OML, CML and KML respectively. No more than 165 living Knight-Companions and no more than 320 living Companions may be appointed, but there are no limits to how many may be appointed to the lower grades.

All citizens of Kelssek, living or dead, are eligible for any of the awards, except federal and provincial politicians and judges while they are holding office; although they may continue to hold an award received prior to taking office, such as Alan Kerk, who was awarded an OML while not holding public office. Citizens of other countries are also eligible for honourary awards; no more than five of these may be made per year. The decision to award the Order of the Maple Leaves is made by an advisory panel, chaired by the President. The advisory panel may also decide to strip a person of the award if it feels that the person has brought the Order into disrepute.
