Palagsis plagas (also known as Las Plagas - The Plagues) is a parasite lifeform first found in the Mediterranean provinces of the Spanish SSR. It has plagued the region for nearly a decade before the Spectre War. After the Spectre War, the Biopreparat of the Soviet Union harnessed the parasitic beings to use as biological weapons amongst enemy populations and forces.

Characteristics

Las Plagas is a type of parasite which alters its host's behaviour by attaching itself internally into the nervous system. The undeveloped parasite is found between the lungs, beneath the heart, between the ribs, where it can tap into the host's spinal cord, which is a link to the rest of the nervous system. Unlike other parasites, the Plagas are a social organism, meaning that live together in social harmony (instead of individually) and have a collective intelligence. It is believed that the parasites can communicate with each other through a unique sonic wave frequency that can only be heard by them, although this is purely hypothetical.

The plagasi (plural form of plagas) also have an high adaptablity rate, allowing them to be hosts in other lifeforms besides humans. Plagasi have been found in (besides humans) dogs, cats, bats, livestock, and other animals around the region.

Symptoms

Symptoms of plagasi infection range from person-to-person, but the following are general symptoms experienced by infected persons:

  • Muscle tension
  • Increased temperature
  • Increased metabolism
  • Hypertension
  • Cerebral swelling

Diagnosis of plagasi infection is extremely difficult. It is almost impossible for anyone to successfully diagnose and individual with the parasitic infection.

Mutations

Mutations have occured in infected lifeforms. This has included rapid cell growth, appendage mutation and growth, heightened senses, and other unpleasent mutations. To record, the worst seen mutation was a combination of cellular reconstruction and necrosis which created a blob of mutated human cells controlled by a plagasi parasite. An image of the particular mutation can be found here.

Treatment

If a person has been infected with the parasite, then the parasite can still be neutralized with medication before the egg hatches. However, once the plagasi has hatched, then the only way to remove the parasite is by undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatment. This procedure has the possibility of impairing the host's consciousness, as well as kill the host if the plagasi has already matured into adulthood and has substantial control over the hosts nervous system.
