The Party is the only legal political party and is the government apparatus/oligarchy within Laurasia. The Party (and Olicol) is personified by Father, an omnipresent figure constantly depicted on posters and the Instrument. Like The Party (and Olicol) itself, Father is constantly watching. The Party (Olicol) demands complete submission to it, and uses torture to achieve that end. In fact, The Party (Olicol) has mastered a complex system of psychological tools and methods to make people not only confess imagined crimes and forget any thoughts of rebellion, but to actually love The Party (Olicol) itself.

Under The Party, society is composed of three levels:

  • The Inner Party that makes policy decisions and runs the government, which is referred to as simply The Party.
    • Identification tattoo: IP-XXX-XX-XXXX
    • Uniform: Black boilersuit coveralls
  • The Outer Party that works in the state jobs and is the working class of the society. The Outer Party is also under the most scrutiny, being constantly monitored by two-way instruments and other implements of surveillance.
    • Identification tattoo: OP-XXX-XX-XXXX
    • Uniform: Grey boilersuit coveralls
  • The Plebs (Plebeians) that are the lower class, the rabble the Inner Party keeps happy and sedate with beer, gambling, sports, casual sex and plebfeed. They are either sedated or almost entirely ignored.
    • Identification tattoo: P-XXX-XX-XXXX
    • Uniform: None

The classes do not mix much, and anyone who mixes often is usually arrested quickly for interrogation and possible summary destruction.

Oligarchical Collectivism (OLICOL)

Oligarchical Collectivism is the ideological doctrine followed by the Party. It is best summed up by a single passage from the book Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism:

"Power is in inflicting pain and humiliation. Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing. Do you begin to see, then, what kind of world we are creating? It is the exact opposite of the stupid hedonistic Utopias the old reformers imagined. A world of fear and treachery and torment, a world of trampling and being trampled upon, a world which will grow not less but more merciless as it refines itself. Progress in our world will be progress towards more pain. The old civilizations claimed that they were founded on love or justice. Ours is founded upon hatred. In our world there will be no emotions except fear, rage, triumph, and self-abasement. Everything else we shall destroy - everything. Already we are breaking down the habits of thought which have survived from before the War. We have cut the links between child and parent, and between man and man, and between man and woman. No one dares trust a wife or a child or a friend any longer. But in the future there will be no wives and no friends. Children will be taken from their mothers at birth, as one takes eggs from a hen. The sex instinct will be eradicated. Procreation will be an annual formality like the renewal of a ration card. We shall abolish the orgasm. Our neurologists are at work upon it now. There will be no loyalty, except loyalty towards the Party. There will be no love, except the love of Father. There will be no laughter, except the laugh of triumph over a defeated enemy. There will be no art, no literature, no science. When we are omnipotent we shall have no more need of science. There will be no distinction between beauty and ugliness. There will be no curiosity, no enjoyment of the process of life. All competing pleasures will be destroyed. But always - do not forget this - always there will be the intoxication of power, constantly increasing and constantly growing subtler. Always, at every moment, there will be the thrill of victory, the sensation of trampling on an enemy who is helpless.

"If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face -- forever. This is Oligarchical Collectivism."

International parties

As of recent, the Party has spread the ideal of oligarchical collectivism around the world. Several nations have legalized OLICOL parties have allowed them to be created and run in elections. However, others have not. The following is a list of parties and their host nations:

  • Oligarchical Collectivist Party of Greece (Greece)
  • Zairean National Oligarchical Collectivist Party (Zaire)*
  • Oligarchical Collectivist Party of Iberia (Iberia)
  • Parthian Oligerchical Collectivist Movement (Parthia)*
  • National Oligarchical Collectivist Front (Roach-Busters)*

Policies

Crimend

Crimend is a Lausem word meaning crime end or crime stopping. It means to rid oneself of unwanted thoughts, i.e. thoughts that interfere with the ideology of the Party. This way, a person avoids committing thought crime, or rather crimethink, as it is called in Lausem. The mind should develop a blind spot whenever a dangerous thought presented itself. The process should be automatic, instinctive. Laurasians should set to work to exercise themselves in crimend. The should present themselves with propositions - "The Party says the earth is flat", "The Party says that ice is heavier than water" -- and train themselves in not seeing or not understanding the arguments that contradicted them.

Dualthink

Dualthink is a policy best described by an exert from a Party handbook:

"The power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them. To tell deliberate lies while genuinely believing in them, to forget any fact that has become inconvenient, and then, when it becomes necessary again, to draw it back from oblivion for just so long as it is needed, to deny the existence of objective reality and all the while to take account of the reality which one denies—all this is indispensably necessary. Even in using the word "dualthink" it is necessary to exercise dualthink. For by using the word one admits that one is tampering with reality; by a fresh act of dualthink one erases this knowledge; and so on indefinitely, with the lie always one leap ahead of the truth."

Crimethink

Crimethink describes the act of having committed "thoughtcrime"; having thoughts that were unorthodox, or were outside the official government platform. Goodthink, which is approved by the Party, is the opposite of crimethink. Laurasians are always attempting to not commit a thoughtcrime; for if they do, the "thought police" of the Lawful Cooperative are able to arrest them, interrogate them, and place them up for summary destruction.

Sumdest

Sumdest is a Lausem word meaning summary destruction. Summary destruction is the complete eradication of an individual, that individuals past, and all trace that the specific individual has ever existed. This entails massive amounts of manpower within the Lawful Cooperative; and entails the destruction of taxation records, labor hours, etc.

Total taxation

Total taxation is a practice within Laurasia which entails the complete taxing off all income of a Laurasian citizen. In return, Laurasians are given ration credits which are able to purchase certain things at certain amounts. However, those who "work in the free market" often use a barter system and trading in order to get objects not manufactured by the Commodities Cooperative. This "free market maneuvering" is considered illegal in Laurasia and can cause the summary destruction of customers and owners illegal commodities (as well as those who sold them).

Notes

  • In relation to uniform mandation amongst the Inner Party, one should note that Inner Party members are frequently seen not in uniform.
  • In relation to international OLICOL parties, those marked with an asterik are unofficial political parties or movements.
