The Empire of Pergast is a very large, economically powerful nation, remarkable for its compulsory military service. Its hard-nosed, cynical population are ruled by a mostly-benevolent dictator, who grants the populace the freedom to live their own lives but watches carefully for anyone to slip up.
The government -- a sprawling, bureaucracy-choked, corrupt morass -- juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Commerce, and Defence. The average income tax rate is 30%. A healthy private sector is dominated by the Uranium Mining industry, followed by Book Publishing and an Arms Manufacturing industry dominated by 'Pergast Munitions', a government-funded arms company.
Skateparks can be found in every city, the study of medicine is popular throughout Pergast, a crusade against barbaric religious practices has begun, school uniforms are compulsory, the average commuter spends four hours a day driving to and from work, voting is compulsory, every product goes through extensive safety-testing by the government, X-Files ratings have hit an all-time low, foreigners are treated with great suspicion ,employers may fire workers without giving any reason, the government is slowly introducing social welfare programs, euthanasia is now illegal, the automotive industry soaks up huge government handouts and thieves are flogged in public for their crimes. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is relatively low, thanks to the all-pervasive police force. Pergast's national animal is the Bear, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the Pergastan Dollar.

A Brief History of Pergast
The state of Pergast was formed on the 18th of October, 1921. The Great War had left Germany's economy crippled. Lawlessness was rife, and for one man, at least, the solution was obvious. Led by self-proclaimed Kaiser Christian Gottschalk I, Saxony seceded from the Weimar Republic.
Pergast attempted to remain neutral during the second World War, but was occupied by the nazis in the later months of 1939. Thousands of Pergast's young men joined the Wehrmacht and Schutzstaffel, whilst Pergast's capital, Dresden, suffered a horriffic bombing raid at the hands of the RAF on the 13th of Febuary, 1945, burning the city to the ground and levelling numerous historic buildings. After the war, Gottchalk, who had fled to Egypt when the nazis invaded, was restored to his throne.
Christian I died on the 3rd of March, 1972 and his son, Christian II, was crowned in the following year. Pergast endured many years of civil strife until 1981, when Imperial troops finally crushed the rebel factions. This was followed by massive reconstruction and modernisation of the country, and Pergast finally emerged again from its isolation in november 2004.
Under Christian II the army and air force have recieved much increased funding, whilst crime, a major problem until the early 1990's, has been beaten down by the new, uncompromising police force. National Service was introduced in 1994, with every man being required to undergo two years of service in either the army or air force from his eighteenth birthday. Pergast's standing (Volunteer) army numbers at around four hundred thousand combatants, with close to one and a half thousand Main Battle Tanks and twenty four thousand various armoured vehicles.
