The successful experiment of Plutoni was originally a colony launched by Professor Emeritus Egbert B. Gebstadter of the Artificial Intelligence University in Zwangzug, who hoped to study the possibilities of human-robot coexistence.
The experiment was a wild success: starting from 5,040 humans, Plutoni thrived, with robots ultimately being granted citizenship. At that point, the Zwangzug government finally took notice: both nations decided that their interests would be best served with an autonomous Plutoni, and it was formally granted independence. Plutoni is a densely-populated unitary state, ruled by a single mayor. (Douglas Palindromi was the first person to wield this office.)
Plutonians, as they are known, are as geeky as their peon counterparts, but more athletic (steam hockey is all the rage, and some players are actually decent at it). The country sent a team to the World Cup of Ice Hockey 3, which won a single game and lost four. The national team improved significantly in the fourth edition, winning their group and advancing to the quarterfinals. Televised broadcasts, at least on the Reality Channel, are broadcast by announcer Nigel Swumpley.
Plutonians buy and sell in what has been dubbed a "quantum economy": that is, they exchange lottery tickets for the promise of future windfall. Each unit of currency, then, represents an increased chance of "actual" monetary gain, and takes on intrinsic value. The government has no plan ever to conduct this lottery, however, so the economy continues unopposed.
Plutoni served on the Math Committee until its disbanding. It joined the United Nations in order to defend the Democratic Communist States, and assumed the delegacy of Math on June 10, 2007. After Math ceased to exist, Plutoni languished in the Rejected Realms before founding Mathematics Paradise, of which it became the delegate on October 12, 2007. Raymond Gardner is the Plutonian ambassador to the UN.
