The term pocket battleship was applied to a class of ship between the usual heavy cruisers, usually armed with 8" guns, and the fleet battleship with their 14"to 16" guns. Pocket battleships were a German vessel with lighter armour and usually armed with 11" guns.

Of WW11 origin an excellent example was the Graf Spee which operated as a raider in the South Atlantic Ocean. They were built for long distance raiding and convoy interception.--58.167.77.58 15:38, 27 March 2006 (GMT) JDJ
