History

The Republic of Pohjoisvalta was created on 21st September 2004. It was the founder and regional delegate of the North&Baltic for a brief period of time, leaving it due to its lack of popularity (no other nation joined). Pohjoisvalta soon joined Scandinavia and the UN.

The time after independence meant turbulent times for the Pohjoisvaltanese. The country was ranked as a Corrupt Dictatorship when it was extablished, changing to Psychotic Dictatorship at times. Because of this, the nation received no endorsements at the UN, even though it announced that it might be seeking the status of regional delegate in Scandinavia in the future. For unknown reasons the President of Pohjoisvalta changed his way of leading completely and in a few months the nation's UN ranking changed to Democratic Socialists. This meant improved civil&political rights, changes in the prison system and death penalty was abolished. Currently Pohjoisvalta trusts on rehabilitation programs instead of prison sentences, which means that most of the nation's prison were closed.

The President of Pohjoisvalta started as a dictator and is still in power. He led the country to independence and he enjoys the reputation of a national hero and doesn't need to fear the collapse of his popularity. Free presidential elections are held every 5 years.

Politics

The Pohjoisvaltanese head of state is the president who is elected every 5 years. He ruled the country with an iron fist during the dictatorship times and still holds very much power, although the parliament of Pohjoisvalta is the supreme legislative authority in the country.

Regions

Pohjoisvalta is a large country, both by population and size. It is divided in six regions that enjoy a certain level of autonomy: Pohjoismaa (North), Itäkaistale (East), Länsiranta (West), Keskimaa (Middle), Eteläosa (South) and Pohjoisvalta City (the capital). The smallest region by size, Pohjoisvalta City, consists the capital and a few neighboring towns. It has a special status since during an emergency (like a sudden attack from another nation) the president can take total control of it if needed.

Geography

The great Northern Mountains (or Pohjoisvuoret) are situated in the north. The southern and middle parts of the country are mostly covered in forest. Agriculture dominates the landscape in the west while the eastern part is filled with lakes and rivers.

Economy

Pohjoisvalta's economy is ranked "Good" in the United Nations. During Pohjoisvalta's first year of independency the rating has changed from "Strong" to "Weak". The change from a dictatorship to a democracy improved human rights, but the effect on economy was quite the opposite. The GDP Per Capita is $6,981.44 while Scandinavia's GRP Per Capita is $16,180.76. Unemployment rate is quite big, 10.06%, but it has been as high as 22.00%.

The currency of Pohjoisvalta is Markka, abbreviated PVM. 1$ = 2.7PVM.

Demographics

Different Finno-Ugric people make 91% of the population, from which 80% is assumed to be Finns. 7% of the people are from other parts of Scandinavia, and 2% are from elsewhere in the world.

All Finno-Ugric languages are official but Finnish is the one used in everyday life. However, it's not unusual to see villages full of people speaking Estonian, Hungarian and other Finno-Ugric languages. It is legal to change the language of a municipality if over 50% of the population speaks something else than Finnish.
