History

The government of New Britannia, originally did not have a Prime Minister. The position never actually existed until after the death of King James Richard I and the coronation of King Caleb I. It was suggested by Duke Matthew of Grand Leeds to have a parliament and a Prime Minister. Originally, the Parliament was Unicameral and entirely elected, but it later evolved into a completely appointed Bicameral parliament. The prime minister is not required to sit in either the House of Commons, or the House of Lords, but usually sits in the House of Lords. Although Duke Matthew virtually created this new government, he did not assume the role of first Prime Minister. Later, after King Caleb I resigned from the UN, the Prime Minister was given the role of representing the region in the United Nations as UN Delegate.

Qualifications

Several different qualifications apply for the Prime Minister of New Britannian Empire. The Prime Minister must be a citizen of the Empire, natural born or otherwise, though the only candidates to ever run have been around since the birth of New Britannian Empire and the coronation of King Caleb I. A final restriction bars an individual convicted of high treason from running for Prime Minister.

Election Process

The candidates for Prime Minister run for election. The polls remain open for one week and only the King himself may see the ballots. Once the ballots are counted, the winner of the election must be approved by the King, otherwise, his term will not take effect. Such a case has yet to occur in New Britannian history.

Term

The Prime Minister originally had a term of 60 days in office. It was later changed to 50 and then to 100 days. The Prime Minister may be elected and have as many terms as he wishes, without limit.
