King is often considered the typical title for a sovereign monarch, even though only a minority of monarchs in the modern world are kings. Queen is the feminine form, although it is also frequently used to refer to the wife of a King, as in a Queen consort. By contrast, the husband of a ruling Queen is usually styles a Prince consort, rather than a King consort. Be that as it may, a king is the sovereign ruler of a kingdom or some other sort of royal realm. Kings are generally recognized to be below emperors and above grand dukes in honor and rank. High kings, traditional in many cultures with strong Celtic traditions, are often considered to be somewhat above regular kings in rank and honor but still below emperors. However, this tradition is weakening in many cases as the plenitude of emperors in the modern world. including many self-proclaimed or recently created emperors, has had a tendency to reduce the importance attached to that title in the eyes of many. In addition to completely sovereign kings, a very few kings are vassal of an emperor, high king, or other ranking monarch.

Notable currently ruling kings include:

Some emperors are also considered kings. For example, Emperor Andreus of Pantocratoria also styles himself the titular king of France.

Currently ruling queens include Queen Rewa of the Federated Polynesian States and Queen Adrienne of Karmicaria.
