Biography
Rienne Y'ssain is a citizen of Morindira and holds the office of Madame Director. This office is publicly the leader of the Magister Equitum and Auctoritas. Secretly, she is also the leader of Morindira's secret police, the Zsona, and the elite fighting force known as the J’aia Chai.
Early life and career
Rienne was born to a lower middle-class family and at the age of four began primary school. During primary school her life began to change, however. When she was eight years old she got in a fight in school with two girls and killed them both. Although only eight years old, she was tried as an adult due to the gravity of her crime. She was sentenced to the death penalty. She would never meet the firing squad, however. Her execution was faked and she was enrolled in secret police training. At the age of fourteen she was the top of her class at hand-to-hand combat and at the age of sixteen joined the secret police’s elite assassination squad. Over the next five years she served Morindira as one of its top assassins. Her most noted assassination was the former Tomanian Supreme Cordon in 1977 when she was 20. At the age of 21 she became a member of Morindira’s elite fighting force, the J’aia Chai. She served as a member of the J’aia Chai for ten years before finally leaving the force at the age of 31. She is one of only 5 women in Morindira’s history to survive her time in the J’aia Chai and the only woman to have served more than 6 years.
Upon her retirement Rienne was appointed supervisor to the secret police’s assassination squad, in charge of training and disciplining the assassins-in-training. She held this position for 8 years when Natolya M'Kai, the newly-appointed Praetor, appointed Rienne Madame Director. She has held this position for the last 14 years.
Assassination Attempt
On November 5th, 2006, Fanya Kiplin, a member of the Silver Movement, approached Y'ssain after she had spoken at a meeting and was on the way to her car. She had her foot on the running board. She called out to Y'ssain, who turned to answer. She immediately fired three shots: one, relatively harmless, lodged in the arm; the second, possibly fatal, at the juncture of the jaw and neck, the third striking a woman who was talking with Y'ssain when the shots were fired. Y'ssain fell to the ground, unconscious. Y'ssain was taken to her apartment in Valinskya, refusing to venture to a hospital since she believed that other assassins would be waiting there. Doctors were summoned but decided that it was too dangerous to remove the bullets. While Y'ssain began her slow recovery Krazn Gazeta swung into action; ridiculing Kiplin, assuring its readers that immediately after the shooting, "Y'ssain, shot through twice, with pierced lungs, spilling blood, refuses help and goes on her own. The next morning, still threatened with death, she reads papers, listens, learns, observes to see that the engine of the locomotive that carries us towards global domination has not stopped working..."
Other than similar exhortation by the press, surprisingly little was revealed to the Morindiran public -- either about the attempted assassination, the suspect, or Y'ssain's condition. As analyst Richarde Piper writes, "The impression one gains ... is that the M'Chaia Party deliberately underplayed the event to convince the public that whatever happened to Y'ssain, they were firmly in control."
As for Fanya Kiplin, on 03 December she was taken to an obscure parking lot used for military trucks. There was she was ordered to get in to a distant car. As she did so she was shot in the back. A brief announcement of her death appeared in Krazn Gazeta the following day. Her corpse was disposed of in an unmarked grave. There had been no trial.
This assassination was one of the events that marked the beginning of the November Fifth Uprising, a revolutionary movement within Morindira that was led by members of the Silver Movement. The movement was responded to by Morindira's Zsona and the Scarlet Terror.
Y'ssain and the Scarlet Terror
In late 2006, Praetor M'Kai appointed Y'ssain to organize a force to combat internal political threats. On December 20, 2006, the M'Chaia Party officially established the Zsona, a Morindiran acronym for the People's Commission to Combat Revolution and Sabotage. The Zsona received a large amount of resources, and has become known for ruthlessly pursuing any perceived revolutionary elements. Recently, Y'ssain has also begun organizing internal security troops to enforce the Zsona's authority. M'Kai has given the organization tremendous powers to combat the opposition.
