Rosendale is a Kedalfaxian city located at the mouths of the Gulf of Simtropolis and the Greene River. With a population of 1,221,473 in the city proper (2004 census), it is both the largest city in Kedalfax, and the second largest south of the Rocosas Mountains, after Schnabooton.

The city is considered the capitol of Kedalfax, though officially the capitol is located in the Capitol District. The city's downtown is home to many of Kedalfax's most important corporations, including Cremmel Motor Corp., KNaFCo, First Kedalfax Bank, and Devinson.

The city's motto is "Gateway to the Gulf," for its position on the mouth of the Gulf of Simtropolis. It has been an important port and an important hub for commerce since it's settling in 1705.

History

Rosendale was one of the first settlements in Kedalfax. Historical documents show that originally the city was called Roosendaal, after the Dutch city of the same name, where Pieter Kedaalf was born. The name became Rosendale sometime during the early British hold over the area.

The city was settled in 1705 by the Dutch. Originally, the urban area only extended to what is now Outer St.; areas beyond that were reserved for farming. By 1740, more space was needed, so the boarder was moved out to what is now Boarder St. In 1780, a wall was built along what is now Wand St., stretching from the fort on the gulf coast to the north end of the port on the Greene River. In 1810, the British took the city and built a wall at what is now Wall St.

In 1825, city officials realized that the layout of the city was becoming increasingly confusing. A plan for a grid system was established, starting at Grid St, and stretching north east to Ford St. (now Cremmel Blvd.), where a bridge was built across a narrow part of the Greene River. The blocks were made longer and wider than those made in New York, but many of the same ideas were used. A set of blocks along Grid St. was left unused for a new city university, which would become Kentworth University.

After the Mid-Simtropolis War, the Kedalfaxian government decided to place its capitol in Rosendale. The government staked a claim to all lands between Broadway and the Green River north of Ford St., and extended the grid system further north, reserving a number of blocks across from the new government claims for a park.

Realizing the problems with a capitol in one of the nation's major commerce centers, the government declared it's holdings as a Capitol District, separate from the city of Rosendale, the county of Rosendale, and the state of New Virginia. This has become the source of a series of major jurisdictional disputes, which have now become a cliché on law enforcement shows based in the city.

Politics

Rosendale is governed by its City Council, led by the Mayor, Edward Mayer.

Jurisdictional Disputes

Rosendale falls under the jurisdictions of the city of Rosendale, the county of Rosendale, the state of New Virginia, and the Federated States of Kedalfax. However, the Capitol District only falls under the jurisdiction of the FSK. However, as of 1977, the Rosendale City Police Department has the authority to enforce the law in the Capitol District. But due to differences in laws between the city and the District, most RCPD officers don't bother with patrolling the area. This has caused crime rates in Capitol Park to skyrocket, prompting the KGB to create a special division to patrol the park. However, the bureaucracy-choked mass that is the Capitol District Safety Bureau is quite ineffectual.

Transportation

Air

Rosendale is served by the G.B. Warner International Airport (GBW).

Roads

Highways

There are fewer than 5 miles of E-class highway in Rosendale, the vast majority of it being E-111, which begins at the end of Grid St., crosses the Greene River via the Edward F. MacArthur Tunnel, services the urban areas directly across the river, and returns to the city via the Adam A. Ardent Bridge, and runs as an expressway across the peninsula. The E-211 also enters the city for a short stretch as the Lewis K. Arthur Tunnel. E-11 runs along the opposite side of the Greene River.

The city is also served by its Gulf Coast and Greene River Parkways. The parkways start at Grid St. and run along the shores of the Gulf of Simtropolis and the Greene River, respectively.

Railways

Rosendale is directly served by the Trans-Kedalfax Railway. Rail traffic through Rosendale is heavy, and comes in via National Station, located on 1st St. between 7th and 8th Blvds.

Light Rail

Rosendale is served by an extensive subway and tram service, mostly centering around Straits Station in Downtown.
